Program Overview


The Master of Midwifery (Pre-registration, Shortened) is a 20-month program designed for adult nurses to acquire midwifery skills. This flexible work-based course prepares students for registration as midwives with the NMC and develops their skills in safe and competent midwifery care. The Master of Midwifery (Pre-registration, Shortened) is a full-time, 20-month program designed for qualified adult nurses who aspire to acquire midwifery skills at the Master's level. This innovative and flexible work-based course aims to:

  • Address the national shortage of midwives
  • Prepare students for registration as midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Foster committed midwives who contribute to enhancing health and social care through inter-professional collaboration
  • Develop students' skills to practice confidently and competently in various settings
  • Support students in developing transferable communication skills, enhancing critical decision-making abilities, and becoming familiar with associated information technology
  • Enable students to act as advocates and facilitators of change using an evidence-based approach in theory and practice
  • Support students in developing critical awareness and gaining insights into current midwifery practices, enabling them to make sound judgments in complex situations

Outline:

The program consists of 86 weeks in total, with eight study block weeks. Students must complete 3000 hours during the program, comprising 50% theory and 50% practice. Theory weeks include protected self-directed study, reading, and professional development time. During clinical placements, students receive support through online resources, discussions, group work, and reflection sessions. Each week consists of 40 hours, combining practice and theory. During placements, clinical hours are 30 hours per week, with 10 hours of theory. Theory weeks are 40 hours. The program's content and structure are as follows:


Level 6

  • Principles of Midwifery Care (30 credits, compulsory)

Level 7

  • Examination of the Newborn (Pre-reg 7 Shortened) (30 credits, compulsory)
  • Investigating Midwifery Practice (30 credits, compulsory)
  • The Professional Midwife (15 credits, compulsory)
  • Risk Recognition and Midwifery Management (30 credits, compulsory)
  • Complex Midwifery (15 credits, compulsory)
  • Transition to Parenthood (15 credits, compulsory)

Teaching:

The program employs a blended learning approach, combining e-learning with campus-based study to reinforce practice-based skills. The teaching methods include:

  • Experiential learning through simulation within the clinical area
  • Working with course supervisors while managing self-directed work and reflection sessions
  • Access to a virtual learning environment with electronic course materials such as podcasts, blogs, narrated presentations, group discussions, online tutorials, and interactive activities
  • Open learning that attracts self-disciplined and motivated students who can direct the pace of learning to suit personal circumstances and commitments
  • A diversity of teaching, learning, and assessment approaches throughout the curriculum, giving all students the chance to flourish regardless of their preferred learning style
  • Academic, pastoral, and practice placement support throughout the study
  • A welcoming and nurturing learning environment with ongoing opportunities to speak with tutors for support

Careers:

Graduates of the program are eligible for registration as midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. They can pursue employment within local NHS Trusts or progress into management, research, or education positions. Some graduates also consider further education at the PhD level.
