This one-year part-time program is designed for individuals with basic te reo Māori proficiency who seek to enhance their language skills and contribute to its development. Degree Overview:

Extend your te reo Māori skills and learn to communicate, with support, in familiar everyday contexts, and in Māori environments where you feel comfortable. You will be able to contribute positively to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori.


Outline:

This qualification is intended for learners who have a basic understanding and ability in the use of te reo Māori. It is also for those who have a desire to contribute positively to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori, or have a personal and/or professional interest in te reo Māori. Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate, with little support, in familiar everyday contexts, and in Māori environments where they feel comfortable.


Courses:

  • CTR2.001 Mana Tangata: Students will engage in the formulation of grammar structures through the principles of Mana Tangata that influence knowledge of whakapapa relationships within the family, contributing to one’s genealogy.
  • CTR2.002 Mana Whenua: Students are able to utilise the language to identify links to the land, the environment and people who have significantly contributed to mana whenua.
  • CTR2.003 Mana Reo: Students will enhance Reo fundamentals in selected contexts including Taranaki karakia and waiata.
  • CTR2.004 Mana Ao Turoa: Students use foundation level Te Reo Māori skills and knowledge to perform general activities involving the whanau, mahi and community.

Careers:

Roles such as: language support in administration of a range of Māori and non-Māori organisations – Radio station, Tourism, Health sector; language support assistant in a Kōhanga Reo; language support assistant in a Māori Radio Station.

  • Study includes a two-day Noho Marae and one day Wānanga.
