Program Overview

This Building Services and Sustainable Engineering Degree Apprenticeship explores the design, installation, and maintenance of building services systems. With a focus on energy conservation and sustainability, the program covers topics such as environmental science, thermodynamics, and project management. Graduates gain practical skills and industry knowledge, preparing them for careers in building services engineering and energy management.

Program Outline

Learn how to design, install and maintain the services in a building. Engineers work closely with architects to design a healthy indoor environment and promote comfortable thermal, aural and visual conditions in buildings. You’ll consider acoustics, health and safety, heating, lighting, power and supply, and security. Sustainability issues will place you at the cutting edge of designing, developing and managing the new technologies that help to keep a building’s carbon emissions low.

Outline:

Year 1

  • Compulsory Modules:
  • Construction Technology 1:
  • This module introduces you to the principles of the construction methods used in, low rise construction in the UK. You'll look into the properties of materials used in construction. It will help you gain an understanding of the settlement of disputes through the court structure, and the legal principles considered will be applied, particularly to the construction industry.
  • Building Environmental Science: This module introduces key concepts and principles of building science and the internal environment.
  • You'll explore thermal comfort, light, sound, and electricity, along with their governing mathematical and scientific concepts. These concepts are applied to environmental design, fostering a scientific and analytical approach to solving environmental control problems within the built environment. You'll use these tools to appraise construction system designs and solve common problems in the construction industry. You will also look at building services in a wider context. It supports your chosen career and integrates with your first-year studies. It also develops your personal transferable skills, laying a foundation for further studies in the discipline.

Year 2

  • Compulsory Modules:
  • Dynamic Thermal Simulation:
  • The aim of this module is to equip you with the skillsets required for developing advanced building simulation modelling skills. This will will set you apart from traditional building services engineering graduates. The module provides instruction on how to effectively use one of the world’s leading software tools currently available: Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtual Environment (IESVE). You'll also use building energy performance software in relation to working as a Building Services Engineer. The project will enable you to initiate and develop your critical thinking, problem solving and key skills in application to a case study example using appropriate tools of analysis and communication.

Year 3

This module will enable you to develop your critical thinking, problem solving and key skills in application to a case study example using appropriate tools of analysis and communication.

  • Engineering Dissertation: The nature of the dissertation is to present you with a challenge, the solution of which is not readily available, and it will therefore involve you in original work.
  • On an individual basis the you'll be required to carry out an in depth investigation involving theoretical, experimental or investigative analysis or a combination of these.
  • Optional Modules:
  • Project Management & BIM:
  • This module will focus on the role and responsibilities of becoming a project manager. You will learn leadership and organisation skills essential to the role and understand the range of operational activities including analytical monitoring and controlling techniques. To provide knowledge of the construction and installation of the structured cabling systems enabling integrated system connections.
  • Energy Conversion, Distribution and Management: This module addresses issues facing energy conversion, distribution and management.
  • You'll also look at reduced system losses amid depleting energy resources and deteriorating environmental quality. As well as this, you'll focus on integrating renewable and environmentally friendly technologies into the power grid.

Teaching:

Pursue a career in a technical department of government or semi-government institutions where building energy management is a major concern. Engineering at the University of Central Lancashire is ranked in the UK's top 20 according to the Complete University Guide 2020. You can register with the government Find Apprenticeship Service to receive updates on all Degree Apprenticeships. This course meets Apprenticeship Standards and your apprentice will have the knowledge and skills to either succeed in their chosen career or progress to the next apprenticeship level. Apprentices follow an approved study programme, which means they’ll gain a nationally-recognised qualification at the end of their apprenticeship. They’ll study a broad range of skills and knowledge that can be applied to their professional practice. The programme is a great way to address skills and knowledge gaps in your workforce, retain and attract staff who want opportunities for professional development through a high-quality degree. However, you can get funding towards the cost of training and assessment of apprentices. You only pay 5% - the government will co-fund the other 95% (up to the funding band maximum). All apprentices sit an independent end-point assessment (EPA), assessing all the knowledge, skills and behaviours you’ve learnt throughout your apprenticeship. End-point-assessments are graded and you’ll get an apprenticeship certificate after you’ve successfully completed your EPA. It’s a test that’s valued by current and future employers.
