Program Overview


The Art and Design Foundation Entry program is a four-year pathway to specialist degrees in various art and design disciplines, including fashion, graphic design, and photography. It provides a solid foundation through modules covering specialisms, creative problem-solving, and fundamental skills. Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, industry-standard software, and opportunities for international study and career development in the creative industry.

Degree Overview:

This Foundation Entry programme is a pathway to many specialist courses in Art and Design. It is ideal for students who have the ability to study for a degree but don't have the right grades for direct entry. The course provides guaranteed progression to a range of degree programmes, including:

  • Fashion Design
  • Fashion Promotion
  • Fine Art
  • Graphic Design
  • Illustration
  • Interior Design
  • Textile Design
  • Photography

Outline:

The course is delivered full-time over four years at the Preston Campus. It starts in September 2024.


Modules:


Year 0 (Foundation Entry):

  • FDE Introduction to Specialisms: This module introduces students to the variety of ways in which creative practitioners have shaped society and how society influences creative practice.
  • It helps students acquire foundational skills appropriate to a range of specialist areas and introduces them to the wide range of choices in Arts and Media. Students will be challenged to solve problems through creative practice, including the development of ideas and a broad range of experimental and exploratory work.
  • FDE Specialisms: This module helps students understand the fundamental skills relevant to their chosen specialism, as well as develop and practice technical skills in the use of a range of media.
  • Students will also learn critical concepts related to contemporary practice in their chosen specialism and gain a broad understanding of work in a specialism area, preparing them for progression to level 4 study.

Assessment:

Assessment is continual and can take the form of:

  • Individual presentations
  • Verbal critiques
  • Group assessment work
  • Seminar presentations
  • Modules are assessed through project-based work, and in some cases, a portfolio submission at the end of the module is required.

Teaching:

The course is taught by dedicated full-time teaching staff and technicians. Upon completion of the Foundation Entry year and subsequent degree, students could become professional photographers, illustrators, or graphic designers.


Other:

  • Students have access to a base studio with facilities such as wood, metal, and plaster workshops, professional garment manufacturing, and digital design equipment.
  • Students have opportunities to study abroad and gain places on sponsored international trips.
  • Students have access to the industry-standard Adobe Creative Cloud package on both their personal device and on campus.
  • The course is based in the School of Arts and Media.
