Physiotherapy, BSc (Hons) Degree Course
Program Overview
The BSc in Physiotherapy prepares students for rewarding careers in healthcare. Through a combination of university-based and practice-based modules, students develop the knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat a wide range of clinical problems. With ample clinical practice hours, students gain experience in managing their own caseload and applying theory to real-life situations. The program is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, allowing graduates to register as physiotherapists upon successful completion.
Program Outline
You’ll be playing a key role in helping to improve people’s health, wellbeing and quality of life. On this programme you’ll study a combination of University-based and physiotherapy practice-based modules, with lots of time to develop practical skills. You’ll be taught how to diagnose and holistically treat a wide variety of clinical problems with a chance to practice in locations that include Blackburn Rovers Academy as well as placements in Florida and our Cyprus Campus.
Outline:
- Year 1:
- Foundations in Physiotherapy Practice: This module aims to develop the underpinning knowledge and skills to assess and manage a variety of pathologies and conditions affecting neuromusculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological systems.
- Ageing Well: This module aims to equip you with the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to effectively contribute to the health and well-being of people in later life, within the context of the NHS Long Term Plan (Jan 2019), and current health and social care policy.
- Professionalism in Practice: This module aims to develop knowledge, skills, values and behaviours which prepare you for life and contemporary professional practice.
- Year 2:
- Living Well: This module will equip you with the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to effectively contribute to the health and wellbeing of people in adulthood. Within the context of the NHS Long Term Plan (Jan 2019) and current health and social care policy.
- Starting Well: Become equipped with the knowledge skills, values and behaviours to effectively contribute to the health and wellbeing of parents, children and young people within the context of health and social care and the NHS Long Term Plan (2019) and current health and social care policy.
- Physiotherapy in Practice 1: Physiotherapy in Practice provides contemporary practice-based opportunities to apply campus-based learning, enabling you to develop further knowledge, competence and clinical and professional skills.
- Enhancing Physiotherapy Practice: Develop the foundation knowledge learnt across previous modules by exploring contemporary issues surrounding physiotherapy practice. Allowing you the flexibility to enhance your knowledge in key themes which you wish to develop. You'll also identify and complete an elective placement in an area of their choice.
- Physiotherapy Research Project: Consolidate your research methodology knowledge from previous modules, develop management skills and work independently to conduct a major piece of literature-based research. You'll clearly define a problem, which will be solved through the extraction of relevant literature and synthesis of the information to produce a literature review in the format of a named journal.
- Exploring Contemporary Physiotherapy Practice: Critically explore two areas of physiotherapy practice in more depth, within a choice of options. You'll develop a variety of knowledge, skills, values and behaviours depending on the options chosen. You'll also develop your reflective and evidence-based practice skills to graduate level.
Assessment:
- You’ll complete approximately 1,000 hours (29 weeks) of assessed clinical practice.
- There’s an emphasis on real-life assessments that reflect the ways in which students will learn and practice during the course. Methods include practicals, vivas, presentations, assignments and clinical practice based assessment.
- We are committed to providing timely and constructive feedback for all assessments.
Teaching:
- You’ll be taught in our purpose-built rehabilitation and assessment facilities, which includes a therapy clinic and movement analysis laboratory.
- You’ll complete approximately 1,000 hours (29 weeks) of assessed clinical practice.
Careers:
- Physiotherapists with a BSc in Physiotherapy work in many places including hospitals, health centres, industry, private practices and sports clubs.
- The majority of our graduates take up jobs in the NHS, some work in private practice and others continue their study at postgraduate level.
Other:
- The course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).
- As part of your studies, you’ll complete a number of clinical hours before you graduate. You will be able to build up your own caseload of patients, enabling you to gain experience in managing a clinical diary and dealing with real cases in a supervised environment.
- The physiotherapy programme embraces the NHS Values of: working together for patients; respect and dignity; commitment to quality of care; compassion; improving lives; and everyone counts.
- We have excellent links with physiotherapists working within the NHS and private practices across the North West as well as links with charities, international institutions and hospitals.
- Members of the course team are actively involved with the professional body (CSP) in positions that include membership of education committees and research project steering groups.
