Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This 30-credit Level-7 theory module has been designed to support practitioners to develop the skills and knowledge needed to provide high-quality trauma-informed care. As part of a multi-disciplinary cohort made up of practicing midwives and physiotherapists, you will develop an awareness and understanding of the impact of trauma on the body, the mind, and the way women and families experience maternity care. You will be supported to explore causes of trauma including adverse childhood experiences, marginalisation and disadvantage, sexual trauma, birth trauma, as well as how and why re-traumatisation can occur. The concept of vicarious trauma will be explored, recognising the impact of witnessing trauma as a health professional. In order to facilitate future service improvement, you will critically evaluate the use of trauma-informed models of care, structural competency and the impact of national and international policies and drivers. Human factors and the impact of widening the scope of practice for healthcare professionals will be woven through the programme to prepare you for implementing change in your place of work.

Teaching:

The course will be delivered using a blended learning approach, with a mixture of face-to-face and online teaching. It includes support to develop Level-7 writing and study skills. Course contributors include staff and clinical partners from a range of multi-disciplinary backgrounds.
