Program Overview
The Enhanced Paediatric Nursing Skills module is a 30-credit, level 7 program designed for Band 5 and 6 nurses to enhance their clinical assessment skills for babies, children, and young people. Delivered in partnership with Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the module combines online and face-to-face teaching, covering anatomy, pathophysiology, and practical assessment techniques. Upon completion, nurses will be equipped to undertake patient histories, physical examinations, and communicate findings effectively, reducing avoidable hospital reviews and admissions.
Program Outline
Outline:
- The Enhanced Paediatric Nursing Skills (EPNS) module is a 30-credit, level 7 module that provides children's nurses with the knowledge and skills to undertake enhanced clinical assessments of babies, children, and young people to help reduce avoidable hospital reviews and admissions.
- It is appropriate for Band 5 and 6 nurses (or equivalent) working in a range of settings, including hospitals, community, and other settings such as schools and hospices.
- The module is delivered in partnership with Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and allows nurses to develop knowledge in anatomy and pathophysiology and skills in clinical assessment, using a blended approach of online and face-to-face teaching and asynchronous E-learning.
- On completion of the course, nurses will be able to undertake a patient history and physical examination and communicate their findings and recommendations to senior clinical colleagues in a safe, effective, and timely manner.
Assessment:
- Students will be assessed using a variety of methods, including:
- a practice-based clinical skills workbook
- a multiple-choice examination
- a reflective assignment
- Training will be delivered by advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, clinical educators, and pediatricians.
- The module will include:
- anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and renal systems and dermatology
- pathophysiology, investigations, and management of common pediatric conditions, including: gastroenteritis, chromic constipation, physiological jaundice, viral-induced wheeze, asthma, bronchiolitis, croup, diabetes mellitus, nephrotic syndrome, eczema, and sepsis
- how to recognize and respond appropriately to a deteriorating baby, child, or young person
- how to take a history and perform a basic examination of a baby, child, or young person, including: general inspection, cardiovascular, respiratory, and abdominal examinations
- communication skills around effective SBAR handover, escalating concerns, and communicating with babies, children, young people, and their families
