Program Overview

This Level 7, 30-credit module equips midwives with advanced skills for enhanced maternal care in labor ward, high-dependency, and critical care settings. Through blended learning, students develop knowledge in pathophysiology, psychosocial support, and evidence-based interventions.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This 30-credit Level 7, skills-based module has been designed with clinical partners. It aims to teach midwives the necessary skills to provide enhanced maternal care to women in the clinical environment being cared for in the labor ward, high-dependency, and critical care settings. You'll be able to develop your knowledge of underlying pathophysiology, support of physical and psychosocial wellbeing, and the impact of human factors in clinical decision-making. You will evaluate and critically appraise evidence-based interventions, research, and policies which influence care, exploring innovative solutions to barriers to deliver best practice. Whilst completing the course, you will enhance your practice in this area by learning new clinical skills and developing proficiencies in assessing and managing the deteriorating patient, through high-end simulation and experience in the clinical area. Additionally, you'll complete an Enhanced Competency Passport which aligns with a national approach to the skillset required to deliver enhanced maternal care. The course will be delivered using a blended learning approach, with a mixture of face-to-face and online teaching. The program is set over the year to allow time for completion of clinical competencies and a more flexible approach to studying. Course contributors include staff and clinical partners from a range of multi-disciplinary backgrounds.
