About Program

Program Overview

This BEng degree in Civil and Structural Engineering equips students with the knowledge and skills to design, construct, and maintain sustainable infrastructure systems. Through a combination of theoretical and practical learning, students develop a broad understanding of geotechnical, structural, environmental, and management aspects of civil engineering. A placement year in industry provides hands-on experience and professional development, preparing graduates for a range of roles in the highly employable field of civil engineering.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This BEng degree equips you with the underlying knowledge and skills you need to become a creative Civil and Structural Engineer, capable of planning, designing, and overseeing the construction of sustainable structures and transport infrastructure systems. Civil and Structural Engineering involves the design, construction, and maintenance and repair of infrastructure such as roads and bridges, buildings, and underground transport systems. You’ll develop a broad knowledge of geotechnical, structural, environmental and management aspects of civil engineering, and gain the computing, mathematical, drawing and communication skills you need as an engineer. A placement year in industry, taken in year three of the programme, enables you to build contacts whilst developing your skills and professional confidence. On completion of the programme you’ll be able to enter range of graduate civil engineering roles.

Outline:

First year

Core

  • Computer Aided Engineering
  • Design, Build and Test (Civil and Structural Engineering)
  • Electronics and Mechanics
  • Mathematical Methods and Applications
  • Engineering Materials
  • Thermofluids

Second year

Core

  • Design of Steel and Concrete Structures

Assessment:

You’ll undertake a range of design exercises where you’ll address real industry problems/scenarios. These projects enable you to apply your theoretical knowledge, while improving your communication skills. Teaching methods include formal lectures, case studies, tutorial exercises, practical demonstrations, site visits, directed learning, group and individual work.

Careers:

Civil Engineers are amongst the most employable and highly paid of all graduates. After six to seven years of experience you can satisfy the requirements of the professional institutions and become a Chartered Engineer, allowing you to move into more specialised areas. Recent graduate destinations include:

  • AMEC
  • ARUP Consulting Engineers
  • Mowlem Civil Engineering
  • Nottingham City Council
  • W S Atkins Consulting Engineers

Other:

  • The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as:
  • partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng)
  • A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.

UK: £9,250 (sandwich year: £925) International: £23,290 (sandwich year: £2,328)
