Children’s Clinical Reasoning and Diagnostic Skills (Level 7)

Degree Overview:
This module is a core component of the MSc/PgDip Advanced Clinical Practice (Child) and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Child) Apprenticeship courses offered by the School of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University. It is designed for students who have successfully completed the "Children's Applied Clinical Physiology" and "Children's Advanced Assessment Skills" modules and meet the program's prerequisites. The module aims to enhance students' clinical reasoning skills in relation to a wide range of health problems experienced by infants, children, and young people up to the age of 18. It builds upon students' existing knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology, advanced assessment, and clinical decision-making. A key focus of the module is managing clinical uncertainty, enabling students to develop their autonomous and professional skills at an advanced level.
Assessment:
The module is assessed through two elements:
- Element 1 - Exam (2½ hours): This exam assesses students' understanding of the module's content.
- Element 2 - Practice Based Learning Record: This record documents students' clinical experiences and demonstrates their application of the module's concepts in practice. Students must pass both elements of assessment to successfully complete the module.
Other:
- The module is only available to students who meet all the prerequisites and have been selected for the course. Students must have successfully completed the "Children's Applied Clinical Physiology" and "Children's Advanced Assessment Skills" modules first.
- The module is offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2.
- Students must have a minimum of 3 years post-registration experience as a healthcare professional registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), or The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
- Students must have at least 50% of their role working with infants, children, and young people up to the age of 18.
- Students must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant clinical environment.
- Students must have access to appropriate clinical support and supervision for the development of knowledge and skills to an advanced level.
- Students must demonstrate employer support for their development to an advanced level within the workplace, including protected learning time and a designated "Practice Facilitator."
- Students must be able to organize for a Doctor/qualified Advanced Practitioner to act as their designated "Practice Facilitator."
- Students must have day-to-day supervision and support from an experienced clinical team.
