Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This is a short professional module validated by the Nursing Midwifery Council, General Pharmaceutical Council, and Health Care Professions Council. It prepares qualified nurses, midwives, pharmacists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, therapeutic radiographers, and advanced paramedics for independent prescribing, and diagnostic radiographers and dietitians for supplementary prescribing.

Objectives:

The module aims to prepare qualified healthcare professionals for independent or supplementary prescribing.

Program Description:

The module is delivered in one induction day plus 12 study days (with an additional two half-days for exams). Teaching days are 9am-4pm, requiring full attendance. All students are required to undertake an additional 10 blended learning days (not timetabled). The proportion of online to onsite attendance will vary between cohorts, but full attendance is monitored for both.

Assessment:

  • Element 1: Drug calculation exam
  • Element 2: VIVA
  • Element 3: Pharmacology exam
  • Element 4: Practice portfolio
  • Element 5: Case study
  • All elements of assessment must be passed to pass this module.

Teaching:

  • The module is delivered in a combination of face-to-face and online learning.
  • Teaching days are 9am-4pm, requiring full attendance.
  • This professional qualification will contribute to furthering advanced practice.

Other:

  • Students need to complete 90 clinical hours of practice, of which a minimum of 30 hours are to be spent working directly with the Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP).
  • Applicants may find it beneficial to complete a health assessment module prior to undertaking the non-medical prescribing programme, for example, advanced assessment skills for clinical practice.
  • The deadline for each cohort is 4 weeks before the first day.
  • We no longer offer HEE funded places for pharmacists, you will need to be sponsored by your Trust or self-funded.
  • Students who have not previously undertaken study at academic Level 7 (Masters level) are advised to consider the workshop: Preparation for Masters Level Study, which can be found on the CPPD prospectus.
