Degree Overview:

The RIBA Professional Practice Part 3 course is the final stage of an architectural student's professional training. It builds upon the knowledge and experience gained during the previous seven years of academic study and professional practice. The program aims to equip students with the necessary skills, awareness, and abilities to demonstrate professional competence and integrity. The course is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

• Develop competence and integrity in professional architectural practice.
• Navigate through legislative, regulatory, statutory, and commercial constraints.
• Reflect on and act in accordance with the diverse aspects of professional practice.

Outline:

The RIBA Professional Practice Part 3 course is a part-time program that can be completed in 12 months. It comprises the following modules:

Lecture series and examination:

• This module includes a series of 20+ lectures covering all topics in the Professional Criteria at Part 3.
• It culminates in two limited-open-book written examinations:
• A 1.5-hour paper with 20 short questions.
• A 3-hour paper with 5 questions based on an unfolding scenario.

Case study and records of professional experience:

• This module is work-based and requires students to create an illustrated 8,000-word study of a project they have been directly involved in.
• The case study allows students to demonstrate their judgment, understanding, and knowledge of the project's professional and legal circumstances through analysis, critical evaluation, and personal reflection.
• Students must also maintain Professional Development and Experience records demonstrating a minimum of 24 months of appropriate professional experience.

Career evaluation and professional interview:

• This module includes a work-based component consisting of a professional Curriculum Vitae and an illustrated 2000-word personal critical self-appraisal.
• Students participate in a professional interview (viva voce) covering their experiential learning, professional judgment, and knowledge based on study and experience.

Assessment:

The program utilizes a variety of assessment methods, including:

• Professional Development and Experience records: Documentation of a minimum of 24 months of appropriate professional experience.
• Professional Curriculum Vitae: A detailed resume outlining the student's professional experience and qualifications.
• Personal critical self-appraisal: A 2000-word reflection on the student's professional development and learning.
• Professional interview (viva voce): An oral examination assessing the student's competence and knowledge based on their experience and study.

Teaching:

The program employs a variety of teaching methods, including:

• Lectures: A series of 20+ lectures delivered by experts and practitioners covering all topics in the Professional Criteria at Part 3.
• Small group tutorials: Provide individual support and guidance for students in developing their case studies and reviewing their professional experience.
• Role-playing workshops: Facilitate practical application of professional skills and knowledge through simulated scenarios.
