Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The BSc (Hons) Information Technology (Top Up) is a one-year full-time program designed for students who have already completed a relevant HND or equivalent qualification. The program aims to provide students with the skills and understanding needed to analyze, design, and implement computer-based systems. It offers a broad approach to key IT topics, combining practical skills with theoretical understanding. Students have the option to undertake a work placement in their third year, which provides valuable experience in applying their knowledge to real-world systems.

Outline:

The program is structured as follows:

  • Taught Modules (September - May):
  • Application Development:
  • This module focuses on programming languages and their applications in various areas. It builds upon the programming skills acquired in the first year and explores the development of different applications to solve various problems. Students explore how these technologies are used in real-world business applications.
  • Systems and Cyber Security: This module delves into the complex field of computer and network security.
  • It covers fundamental security principles, threats faced by systems, and mitigation techniques. Students gain awareness of security issues in all areas of computing and learn best practices for risk management.
  • ICT Project Management in Practice: This module provides students with practical experience in collaborative ICT project development.
  • Students work in teams to go through the full ICT development lifecycle, from requirements gathering to deployment. The module involves real clients and users, providing students with practical and technical skills in consultancy and development.
  • Optional Modules:
  • Innovation and Enterprise:
  • This module encourages students to think creatively and develop entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial skills. It equips them with methods and processes to recognize opportunities and harness commercially viable benefits.
  • Smart Internet Technologies: This module explores emerging mobile and multimedia cloud technologies, including All-IP Networking Architectures, Cloud Computing, 5G networking, SDN/NFV, and IoT technologies.
  • Data Mining and Big Data Analytics: This module introduces the theory, concepts, and techniques of data mining and its role in business and scientific research.
  • Students gain hands-on experience using data mining algorithms and tools.
  • AR/VR Technologies: This module covers the technologies and algorithms required to develop and deploy virtual reality and augmented reality applications.
  • It covers hardware, software development, 3D user interfaces, and presence.
  • Project Module (June - September):
  • Honours Informatics Project:
  • This module is a substantial piece of work that allows students to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Students undertake an independent project, guided by a supervisor, and submit a dissertation of approximately 12,000 words.

Teaching:

The program utilizes a combination of teaching methods, including:

  • Lectures: Delivering theoretical knowledge and concepts.
  • Practical Sessions: Providing hands-on experience with industry-standard software and tools.
  • Tutorials: Offering guidance and support for individual learning.
  • Group Work: Fostering collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Project Work: Allowing students to apply their knowledge to real-world problems.
  • The program is taught by experienced faculty members who are experts in their respective fields. The program also emphasizes a hands-on approach, providing students with the practical skills that employers value.

Careers:

The BSc (Hons) Information Technology (Top Up) program prepares students for a wide range of careers in the IT industry. Graduates are well-equipped for roles such as:

  • Project Management: Leading and managing IT projects.
