Program Outline
Degree Overview:
The Procuring Net Zero Buildings course is a part-time, one-year program designed for individuals in decision-making roles who are seeking to procure more sustainable project portfolios. The course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to procure net zero buildings of the future, addressing the urgent need for upskilling in the built environment sector as the UK transitions towards net zero targets. The program is developed in close partnership with leading employers in the construction sector, ensuring highly relevant, actionable skills that can be rapidly applied within the workplace. It builds on existing knowledge to demonstrate new methods and practices that result in truly sustainable buildings that deliver to Net Zero requirements for their whole lifecycle.
Outline:
The course covers the following key areas:
- A range of procurement methods for a range of contexts (new build, retrofit, operations): Students will learn about various procurement methods, including traditional, design and build, and framework agreements, and how to apply them effectively in different contexts, such as new construction, retrofitting existing buildings, and building operations.
Teaching:
The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, and private study. Students will engage in individual and group projects, site visits, and hands-on learning with real-life application. The program also features industry-leading guest speakers who share their expertise and insights.
Careers:
The qualification will enhance prospects for those with roles and careers in the built environment in the UK and internationally, in particular in roles involving the procurement of buildings that are Net Zero or ‘2050-ready’. Based on feedback from the industry, Net Zero skills are already in high demand as building owners increasingly view their bricks and mortar as assets and seek to reduce carbon consumption, running costs and reputational risk ahead of regulatory requirements. The skills enabled by this qualification will only increase in demand as Governments globally push to make Net Zero standards mandatory.
Other:
The course runs concurrently with three other Net Zero short courses in this program, ensuring students benefit from insights from other roles within the built environment that impact on their own decision-making and ways of working. The other courses are:
- Designing Net Zero Buildings
- Operating Net Zero Buildings
- Leadership and Management for Net Zero Buildings
