Caring for Children and Young People Within a High Dependency Unit (GOSH/LSBU Partnership) (Level 7)
Program Overview
This level 7 module enables qualified nurses to develop, enhance, or initiate changes to their clinical practice within their specialty. It involves students undertaking a work-based approach with tutorial support and guidance, offering the opportunity to critically examine and evaluate current practice and develop new skills and competence based on evidence. The program includes both formative and summative assessments, including reflective logs and presentations, and is available as a standalone module.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This module aims to provide students with an opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge, skills, and competence in relation to a chosen area of professional practice. This module enables students to develop, improve, and/or initiate changes to an area of clinical practice within their own specialty. It is undertaken through a work-based approach and is student-managed with tutorial support and guidance from the module co-ordinator and practice facilitator. This module of learning has been designed to allow each student to define their learning relative to their own area of practice and expertise. Students and employers must be aware of the professional boundaries that help to shape and determine the journey undertaken by the student when developing new skills and competence for working practices.
Objectives:
- To critically examine and evaluate current levels of children’s professional practice and competence within an inter-professional working environment.
- To develop new knowledge and skills and enhance competence based on a critical analysis of the evidence in line with professional and occupational boundaries.
- To demonstrate and work within professional and regulatory standards which developing and/or extending skills.
Assessment:
Formative assessment:
- Reflective logs will detail the experience gained in the assessment and care of a patient within the high dependency unit and will provide evidence of developing competence.
- A minimum of three episodes of care should be recorded in the reflective log in order to pass the academic module overall.
- One of these logs will be submitted as part of your formative assignment.
Summative assessment:
- A 20-minute presentation based on an episode of care followed by questioning on the patient and condition chosen.
- The presentation should focus on a single treatment strategy and the evidence-based rationale for any nursing interventions.
- This module is appropriate for nurses who are coming up to two years qualified and over, as by that time you would have consolidated your learning and are most likely beginning to care for acutely unwell patients within your areas.

In exceptional circumstances if an individual has evidence of recent professional learning they may enter with 60 Credit points at level 6 or equivalent.
