Degree Overview:

This module has been developed for registered practitioners with experience in the adult, learning disability or mental health setting who work within a paediatric setting and require the underpinning knowledge to care for and support paediatric patients and their families. It can also be used to help Nursing Associates achieve a BSc degree by contributing towards the credit total. The module will allow the students to develop their underpinning knowledge in key areas of paediatric anatomy and physiology, medical conditions seen in children and young people and the evidence-based treatments used in practice, also demonstrate an understanding of the theories used.

Objectives:

  • Allow the student to develop the knowledge and the appreciation of theories required to care for paediatric patients and support their families within all care settings.
  • To critically analyse the impact illness has on the child or young person and the family and the impact family centred care has on this experience.
  • To allow the student to practice the newly learned skills and knowledge within a simulation environment and reflect on this practice before applying to their clinical area.

Assessment:

  • Formative assessment: The student will write 3 reflective pieces based on what was learned on the course and how it was or will be applied in everyday practice, and how this learned skills/ knowledge will benefit the patients and service users.
  • Summative assessment: An Objective Situational Clinical Examination (OSCE) will be used to assess the clinical knowledge, practical skills and communication tools built throughout the study days to provide effective care, treat symptoms and escalate concerns in a safe clinical environment.
  • This will be based on commonly seen conditions within paediatrics- sepsis, bronchiolitis, epilepsy, asthma as well as your communication, family-centred care and escalation skills.
