Fundamental Care of Children and Young People (GOSH/LSBU Partnership) (Level 7)
Program Overview
It focuses on developing understanding of paediatric anatomy, physiology, medical conditions, and evidence-based treatments. The module is assessed through reflective logs and an Objective Situational Clinical Examination (OSCE) to demonstrate clinical knowledge and practical abilities.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This module has been developed for registered practitioners with experience in the adult, learning disability or mental health setting who work within a paediatric setting and require the underpinning knowledge to care for and support paediatric patients and their families. It can also be used to help Nursing Associates achieve a BSc degree by contributing towards the credit total. The module will allow the students to develop their underpinning knowledge in key areas of paediatric anatomy and physiology, medical conditions seen in children and young people and the evidence-based treatments used in practice, also demonstrate an understanding of the theories used.
Aims of the module:
- Allow the student to develop the knowledge and the appreciation of theories required to care for paediatric patients and support their families within all care settings.
- To critically analyse the impact illness has on the child or young person and the family and the impact family centred care has on this experience
- To allow the student to practice the newly learned skills and knowledge within a simulation environment and reflect on this practice before applying to their clinical area
Assessment:
- Formative assessment: Reflective logs will detail the experience gained in the assessment and care of a patient within the high dependency unit and will provide evidence of developing competence. Three episodes of care should be recorded in the reflective log in order to pass the academic module overall. One of these logs will be submitted as part of your formative assignment. You will also be required to utilise supportive literature to expand upon your knowledge throughout your discussion.
- Summative assessment: An Objective Situational Clinical Examination (OSCE) will be used to assess the clinical knowledge, practical skills and communication tools built throughout the study days to provide effective care, treat symptoms and escalate concerns in a safe clinical environment. This will be based on commonly seen conditions within paediatrics- sepsis, bronchiolitis, epilepsy, asthma as well as your communication, family-centred care and escalation skills.
