Care of the Child with Cardiac and Respiratory Compromise (PICU) (GOSH/LSBU Partnership) (Level 6)

This program focuses on providing nurses with essential knowledge and skills to manage respiratory and cardiovascular compromise in pediatric intensive care settings. Assessment includes critical incident presentations, a clinical logbook, a theoretical assessment, and an oral case presentation.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
The module focuses on cardio-respiratory support therapy and nursing management of children with cardiovascular and/or respiratory compromise. It explores conditions and situations leading to respiratory and circulatory compromise and its impact on the child and family. There is a strong emphasis on cardiovascular support and mechanical ventilation and its application in the clinical setting.
Objectives:
- Provide students with essential knowledge surrounding disease processes and physiological changes necessitating respiratory and/or cardiovascular support, and the subsequent impact on the child and family.
- Promote understanding of the principles and underpinning theory of managing respiratory and cardiovascular compromise in pediatric intensive care.
- Enable students to critically evaluate potential long-term outcomes for the child or young person requiring cardiac and respiratory support therapies, and their family.

- Entry requirements:
- Appropriate professional registration is required with a minimum of 6 months post-registration experience within intensive care.
- 240 Credit points of which no more than 120 are at level 4 and no less than 120 at level 5 or equivalent.
- In exceptional circumstances, individuals with evidence of recent professional learning may enter with 60 Credit points at level 5 or equivalent.
- Registered as an RN (Child) on the NMC professional register with 6 months experience in a paediatric intensive care area.
