Clinical Complexity in Advanced Practice (Primary and Urgent Care) (Level 7)
Program Overview
This MSc/PgDip module equips students to provide patient-centered services in community and primary care settings in England. Graduates will be prepared to manage various acute and chronic illnesses in an advanced capacity. The program includes an OSCE and Clinical Portfolio assessment and is open to selected healthcare professionals with experience and relevant support from their employers.

Degree Overview:
This module is a core component of the MSc/PgDip Advanced Clinical Practice (Adult) and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Adult) Apprenticeship courses offered by the School of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University. It is designed for students who have successfully completed the prerequisite modules and have been selected for the program. The module focuses on preparing students to provide effective, responsive, patient-centered, innovative community and primary care services in England. It addresses the need for Advanced Practitioners to demonstrate competence in managing patients with a wide range of common acute and long-term complex presentations.
Assessment:
The module is assessed through two elements:
- Element 1: Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)
- Element 2: Clinical Portfolio (Reflection/analysis to account for 2,500 words) Both elements must be passed to successfully complete the module.
Careers:
This module enables students to develop, implement, and evaluate safe and appropriate management for adult patients presenting with common acute and long-term complex health problems within the Primary and Urgent Care settings.
Other:
- The module is only available to students who meet all pre-requisites and have been successful in the course selection process. Students must have successfully completed the following modules:
- Physiology for Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP_7_009)
- Advanced Clinical Assessment Skills (ACP_7_010)
- Clinical Reasoning and Diagnostic Skills (ACP_7_011)
- Prescribing for Clinical Practice (V300) (NMP_7_040) or Enhancing Practice through Work Based Learning (WHN_7_015)
- Students must be currently registered as a healthcare professional with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), or The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
- Students must have a minimum of 3 years of post-registration experience.
- Students must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant clinical environment.
- Students must have access to appropriate clinical support and supervision for the development of knowledge and skills to an advanced level.
- Students must demonstrate employer support for the following:
- Willingness to release the student to enable them to dedicate the equivalent of 3 hours per week throughout the module (in addition to attendance at the university) as protected learning time to enable the student to work in a 'supernumerary capacity' to focus on their clinical/professional development evidenced by completion of the Practice Based Learning record.
- Able to support the student to organise for a Doctor/qualified Advanced Practitioner to act as their designated "Practice Facilitator" to initially supervise and support the applicants overall clinical development and facilitate completion of specified practice-based learning activities. Sign off for specific aspects of learning is required (this responsibility can be shared with other senior experienced clinical colleagues however nomination of an overall Practice Facilitator is required).
