Degree Overview:

This two-year program prepares students for a career in adult nursing, encompassing a wide range of opportunities in general medical and surgical wards, as well as specialist units like Accident and Emergency or intensive care. The program is designed to ensure students develop well-rounded nursing knowledge, skills, and attitudes, representing a highly valued profession.


Objectives:

The program aims to:

  • Equip students with the values, frameworks, and skills that underpin adult nursing.
  • Introduce students to public health concepts and contemporary public health issues.
  • Enhance students' knowledge and understanding of pharmacology and medicines management.
  • Develop students' ability to utilize clinical reasoning to respond to and manage complex scenarios in adult nursing.
  • Enable students to develop their understanding of assessment, altered pathophysiology, and management of patients with complex physical and acute mental health care needs.
  • Equip students with the skills necessary to plan and carry out original research in a chosen area of professional practice.

Outline:


Year 1:

  • Assessing, planning and providing care in Adult Nursing: This module focuses on different methods and frameworks, teaching holistic assessment underpinned by evidence-based practice.
  • It prepares students to carry out fundamental nursing skills across the four fields of nursing.
  • Pharmacology and medicines management in Adult Nursing: This module develops students' knowledge and understanding of the principles of pharmacology and medicines management, ensuring they are prescriber-ready upon registration with the NMC.
  • Practice Experience Year 1: Students will have five placements of between four and six weeks, most within the adult nursing field, but also including placements in different nursing areas to gain a wide experience.

Year 2:

  • Enhancing and evaluating care in Adult Nursing: This module develops students' ability to utilize clinical reasoning to respond to and manage unfamiliar and complex scenarios in adult nursing, evaluate care provided, and develop the skills of other team members.
  • Acute and complex care in Adult Nursing: This module focuses on addressing the care needs of adult patients with complex physical and acute mental health care needs.
  • Mother and new-born: This virtual learning module introduces students to the nature of normal childbirth and neonatal care, exploring antenatal care, childbirth, postnatal care, and the role of the midwife in delivering woman-centered care.
  • Research in health and social care: This module consolidates and extends students' knowledge of research approaches and methods, enhancing their ability to be critical users of research evidence.
  • Transition to Leadership: This module helps students develop and build effective leadership skills in a complex healthcare setting, exploring theoretical models of leadership, quality improvement, and patient safety.
  • Practice Learning: Students will have three placements, one in a non-adult nursing setting.
  • The final twelve-week practice learning opportunity is undertaken in the Host Trust with identified practice assessors.
  • Dissertation (MSc only): This module provides students with the opportunity to undertake original inquiry in a chosen area of professional practice, either through a systematic review of the literature or a research/work-based project.

Assessment:

The program utilizes a variety of assessment methods, including:

  • Simulated practice: Students practice fundamental nursing skills in simulated environments.
  • Essays: Students demonstrate their understanding of theoretical concepts and apply them to real-world scenarios.
  • Presentations: Students present their research findings and critical analyses.
  • Clinical assessments: Students are assessed on their ability to apply their knowledge and skills in clinical settings.
  • Dissertation (MSc only): Students complete a dissertation based on original research or a work-based project.
