Care of the Vascular Patient (Imperial College Healthcare NHST/LSBU Partnership) (Level 6)
Program Overview
The inter-professional vascular care module focuses on providing holistic care to vascular patients, emphasizing evidence-based practices and service innovation. Participants will gain knowledge in vascular disease, service delivery, and critical thinking, and develop skills through clinical competency packs and case study vivas. This module enhances career progression in vascular care and provides transferable skills for other healthcare settings.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This inter-professional module is taught by expert clinicians and focuses on multiple aspects of the holistic care of the vascular patient, from both a surgical and medical perspective. The module will encourage participants to develop their knowledge, skills and competence in providing evidence-based care for the vascular patient in the acute care setting. Participants will also develop their skills in critical thinking and service innovation, contributing to an enhanced understanding of the quality of care within vascular services.
Objectives:
- Analyze the anatomical and physiological changes that occur in vascular disease, and relate this to an in-depth understanding of core interventions and care.
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of how vascular services are delivered, the role of the multi-disciplinary team, and the potential for innovation and service development.
- Use critical thinking and reflective skills to solve problems encountered in clinical practice.
- Demonstrate high quality, evidence-based care of the vascular patient, as evidenced by successful completion of the Practice Assessment Document.
- Effective communication and teamwork in a multi-disciplinary environment.
Assessment:
- Element 1 - Clinical competency pack
- Element 2 - Viva using a patient case study Both elements of assessment must be passed to pass this module.
Teaching:
- Taught by expert clinicians.
- 6 taught days at London South Bank University, and St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.
Careers:
Recent policy documents including the Five Year Forward View (Department of Health, 2014) and Clinical Academic Careers Framework (Health Education England, 2015) have stressed the need for a highly skilled, flexible NHS workforce. Completion of this module will provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitude to deliver flexible and high quality care to vascular patients, in line with this requirement. These attributes will facilitate career progression within vascular care, and provide transferable skills that can be used in other specialities or work settings.
