Program Overview


This interactive and participatory program explores current practices in surgical nursing, equipping students with problem-solving and action learning skills to address clinical dilemmas. Through two assessment components, a competency document, and a presentation, students demonstrate their understanding and competence in surgical nursing, preparing them for career advancement in the field. The program also emphasizes multi-professional collaboration and the development of new services to meet future perioperative challenges.

Program Outline


Degree Overview:

This module will explore and challenge current working practices within the Operating Department: in the surgical setting. The teaching and learning methods will be interactive, participatory and student led. Day to day clinical issues will be explored using a combination of problem solving, and action learning approaches. Students will be encouraged to be actively involved in the development of solutions to practice dilemmas. Students on this module will be assessed on both a theory and competence component. It is expected that students will have a full time post with in a theatre department and the support of their manager to achieve competencies within the specialism. The department will also need to be able to support the student in learning additional surgical specialities for the duration of the course. Students need to organise with their manager their own placement mentors.

Element 1 - Competency Document Element 2 - Presentation Both elements of assessment must be passed to pass this module.

Careers:

This module seeks to provide focus and direction for practitioners who wish to develop their skills and expertise in relation to surgical nursing. The module aims to enable an individual practitioner to have broader competence skills to progress in a direction that meets workforce, meeting the needs of the future NHS as outlines in the Five Year Forward View in 2014 by the Department of Health (DH,2014) and the HEE agenda for Clinical Academic Careers Framework (HEE 2015). Encompasses multi-professional working and a sharing of expertise and skills across traditional professional boundaries and fields as new services and roles are being developed to meet current and future challenges for perioperative service delivery. Completion of this Module should help the practitioner to be in a better position to progress in their career and to work in a perioperative setting.
