An online Master of Laws (LLM) in International Energy Law, offered by The University of Law, is a postgraduate degree designed for law and non-law graduates to enhance your academic legal knowledge. This course focuses specifically on developing an in-depth knowledge of International Energy Law. This internationally recognised Master’s will give you the skills to progress in the energy law industry and can open up pathways to careers such as conservation and policy adviser, environmental agency policy maker, NGO, sustainability executive, corporate strategy, energy transition specialist, trading and shipping roles, oil and gas industries roles, and more.
Outline:
Terms 1-2 (full-time) or 1-4 (part-time)
- General Induction: Introduces the program.
- Key Principles of the English Legal System: A two-week compulsory induction for non-law students, and optional for law students seeking a refresher. Covers the fundamentals of the law of England and Wales.
- Compulsory Modules:
- International Energy Law: Focuses on contemporary themes of international energy governance, sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and energy access. Explores sources of international energy law, including domestic laws, international treaties, energy contracts, international customs and practices, international institutions and organizations, along with international arbitrations and awards.
- Research Methods Training: Prepares students for their dissertation.

Term 3 (full-time) or 5-6 (part-time)
- Dissertation in International Energy Law: A 15,000-word thesis allowing for in-depth investigation and reflection on a chosen specialist area.

Assessment:
- Modules: Assessed by a three-hour unseen written examination or a 4,500-word coursework assignment. All assessments are conducted online.
- Dissertation: Assessed by submission of a thesis (15,000 words).
