Program Overview


The Islamic Studies minor at UNO equips undergraduates with knowledge about Muslim states and societies through interdisciplinary coursework, including history, religion, and political science. The program requires 18 credit hours, including required courses in the Modern Middle East and Islam and Muslims. Students can choose electives from a variety of topics related to Islamic Studies, such as women in Islam, Muslims in America, and government and politics of the Middle East.

Degree Overview:

The Islamic Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program focused on Islam and Muslim societies across the globe. The program aims to equip undergraduate students with knowledge about Muslim states and societies through its minor program. The program continuously increases the number of courses at UNO about Islam and Muslims. Given the importance of Islam in world politics and the global economy, the minor program is beneficial for students pursuing careers in business, education, history, anthropology, international studies, religious studies, communication, political science, social work, public administration, art and art history, medicine, criminal justice, sociology, and other fields.


Outline:

The Islamic Studies minor requires a total of eighteen (18) credit hours with a minimum of 12 hours at the 3000 level or above.

  • HIST/RELI/SOC 2190 THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST (3 credits)
  • RELI 3200 ISLAM AND MUSLIMS (3 credits)

Select one of the following:

  • PSCI 3700 GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS OF THE MIDDLE EAST (3 credits)
  • PSCI 4620 ISLAM AND POLITICS (3 credits)

Electives:

Select nine credits from the following list of approved Islamic Studies electives:

  • RELI 3500 TOPICS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES (1 credit) - When taught as an Islamic Studies topic.
  • RELI 4400 WOMEN IN ISLAM (3 credits)
  • RELI 4420 MUSLIMS IN AMERICA (3 credits)
  • HIST 4730 ISRAEL AND PALESTINE (3 credits)
  • HIST 4800 U.S. AND THE MIDDLE EAST (3 credits)
  • PSCI 3700 GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS OF THE MIDDLE EAST (3 credits)

Other:

  • All coursework taken for the Islamic Studies minor must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
