This Advanced Certificate offers professional development for counsellors already trained in person-centred or humanistic approaches. You should have significant clinical experience. The course will align your practice with a competence framework that links to research evidence. The AdvCert provides you with a thorough grounding in the theory, evidence base and practice of CfD. You'll develop your knowledge and competence in psychological clinical assessment and CfD interventions under national guidelines.

  • This is known as Person Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression (PCE-CfD). You'll learn to competently apply it in a variety of contexts, including medical and public sector agencies.

  • CfD: CfD is a manualised form of psychological therapy as recommended by NICE (NICE, 20094) for the treatment of depression.
  • Modality: This modality targets the emotional problems underlying depression along with the intrapersonal processes, such as low self-esteem and excessive self-criticism, which often maintain depressed mood.
  • The therapy aims to help patients contact underlying feelings, make sense of them and reflect on the new meanings which emerge. This, in turn, provides a basis for psychological and behavioural change.
  • Training: You will attend for 5 full days and 2 half days training at the university, complete 80 hours supervised clinical practice, and attend for a minimum of 6 hours of clinical supervision.

Entry Requirements:

A Second Class Honours BA degree or equivalent with a H2.1 or GPA of 3.3 in History is normally required. Different criteria may apply to mature applicants. Selection will be based on applicants' academic record and academic references testifying to their academic ability and enthusiasm for history. An applicant’s active engagement with history outside of the academic context may also be taken into consideration. The same entry requirements and application procedure are in place for both the MA and PDip programme.
