About Program

Program Overview

This 10-week online course provides a deep understanding of behavior change models and techniques for ergonomics and human factors professionals. Through 100% coursework assessments, students develop skills in identifying and addressing workplace behavioral challenges, utilizing evidence-based approaches. This optional module within the MSc Ergonomics and Human Factors program can be completed independently for 20 credits and a Certificate of Credit.

Program Outline

You will gain 20 credits at level 7 with a Certificate of Credit to evidence your learning achievement.

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of psychological models of behaviour and behaviour change
  • Utilise an evidence-based behaviour change process from problem identification through to selection of appropriate behaviour change techniques
  • Critically evaluate how the importance of ergonomics/human factors issues can be communicated and disseminated to various stakeholders

Outline:

Stage 1:

  • Core Modules:
  • Ergonomics and Human Factors (Behaviour Change):
  • This module critically examines the major models, theories and approaches to behaviour and behaviour change pertinent to ergonomics, safety in the workplace; and health and wellbeing. The module will consider how factors such as intentions, attitudes, values and norms shape behaviour and behaviour change. The distinction between models of behaviour and theories of change will be highlighted, as well as the different uses and limitations of such models and theories to understand behaviour. Factors influencing behaviour at a range of levels will be considered including aspects of the individual and the related social and physical environments in which key behaviours occur. The module will ensure that you can define a ‘problem’ in behavioural terms and take a theory driven approach to behaviour change incorporating defined intervention functions and appropriate behaviour change techniques.

Assessment:

  • This course is assessed through 100% coursework with a range of methods, such as essays, research reports, presentations, group work and practical reports.

Teaching:

  • The module is delivered 100% online over 10 weeks using a range of interactive learning materials and some live classroom sessions.
  • Provision is made for discussion and interaction with tutors and fellow students through live virtual classroom sessions and online discussion forums.
  • You will study alongside students who are on the Ergonomics and Human Factors MSc, giving you a wider perspective of cognitive ergonomics and psychology from your global student community.
  • We recommend about 20 hours of study per week to complete one 20-credit module over a 10-week trimester.
  • There will be 1/2 virtual classrooms over the 10 week trimester and if you are unable to attend you will be able to download the session to view in your own time.
  • We've over 10 years' experience in the delivery of online courses which means you can expect the highest standards of teaching and education.

Other:

  • The module considers how factors such as intentions, attitudes, values and norms shape behaviour and behaviour change.
  • The distinction between models of behaviour and theories of change will be highlighted, as well as the different uses and limitations of such models and theories to understand behaviour.
  • Factors influencing behaviour will be considered, including aspects of the individual and the related social and physical environments in which key behaviours occur.
  • You will learn how to define a 'problem' in behavioural terms and take a theory driven approach to behaviour change by incorporating defined intervention functions and appropriate behaviour change techniques.
  • Selecting this optional module will lead to the MSc / PG Dip Ergonomics and Human Factors (Behaviour Change) award.
