Program Overview

This online course in Patient-Centred Care in Diagnostic Radiography provides six units covering topics such as communication, holistic care, and self-audit. Aiming to support PCC approaches within the field, it includes two audit tools and materials relevant to various healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their patient-centered skills.

Program Outline

Outline:

The course is made up of six units and this online course will require approximately 18 hours of study.

  • Unit 1 - An introduction to patient-centred care
  • The first unit will introduce the concept of patient-centred care (PCC).
  • You will consider the nature of interactions in healthcare and ways that healthcare professionals can deliver PCC.
  • Unit 2 – The importance of communication
  • Good communication with patients and their carers is the cornerstone of patient-centred care (PCC).
  • This unit considers what good communication looks and sounds like.
  • Unit 3 – Providing holistic care
  • Unit 3 begins to focus on the specific challenges facing diagnostic radiographers when delivering patient-centred care (PCC).
  • A number of PCC approaches are outlined in this section to help support diagnostic radiographers in providing holistic care.
  • Unit 4 - Managing time pressures
  • This unit considers the role of the diagnostic radiographer in imaging examinations and procedures and looks at how to maintain service efficiency while ensuring care is patient centred.
  • Unit 5 - Self-audit of practice
  • This unit introduces you to a self-audit tool that can be used to measure your level of patient-centred care (PCC) in your day-to-day practice.
  • This type of audit is an ideal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity and will help you to meet the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) biannual CPD audit.
  • Unit 5 - Organisational audits
  • Patient Centred Care in Diagnostic Radiography: An Educational Toolkit is the result of a large-scale research project into PCC in diagnostic radiography.
  • This course shares the research findings and provides learning materials to support the development of PCC behaviours. Both the research project and this online course were funded by the College of Radiographers Industry Partnership Scheme.
  • The development costs for this course were funded by the College of Radiographers Industry Partnership Scheme
  • Student radiographers and trainee assistant practitioners will find this course useful to develop their skills in patient-centred care.
  • Qualified diagnostic radiographers or assistant practitioners working in clinical practice or in educational roles may find it useful to guide students or trainees about PCC approaches while on clinical placement.
  • It may also be useful for radiographers preparing for their bi-annual Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) audit.
  • The two audit tools provided in this course may be useful for radiographers working in governance roles to evidence PCC within their organisation.
  • The self-audit could be used to measure levels of PCC within a group of radiographers in a particular department or organisation.
  • The first course units have been written in such a way that they may be useful CPD activities for anyone working in health or social care who wishes to increase their knowledge of patient-centred care, and it is hoped that a variety of health or social care professionals will access these materials.
  • Dr Emma Hyde is an Associate Professor in Learning, Teaching and Pedagogy at the University of Derby.
  • Emma is a qualified HCPC registered Diagnostic Radiographer.
  • Before joining the University in 2006, Emma worked as a Diagnostic Radiographer in the NHS for approximately 10 years, specialising in CT and MRI scanning.
  • The learning platform is compatible with screen reader technology to assist those with visual impairments.
