Kent State University's Human Development and Family Science program offers a comprehensive understanding of human development and family influences. The program offers four concentrations and early admission to graduate programs, as well as preparation for Ohio licensure and certification.

Degree Overview:

The Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Science program at Kent State University provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human development and its interplay with family and societal influences. The program emphasizes the development of skills and knowledge necessary to positively impact individuals, families, and communities.


Objectives:

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Identify the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions of human development and family relationships.
  • Understand the reciprocal influences of family, school, work, and community contexts on human development.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of program development, delivery, and evaluation, and identify practical implications of human development and family relationship concepts.
  • Access scholarly sources and critically evaluate empirical research; demonstrate an understanding of theories, methods, and principles of research; and effectively communicate ideas.
  • Recognize the unique strengths and needs of individuals and families and apply knowledge through involvement with and study of diverse populations.

Careers:

The program prepares students for a wide range of careers in diverse settings, including:

  • Family and community-based social services
  • Prevention
  • Nonprofit administration
  • Family and community intervention

Other:

  • The program offers four concentrations: Case Management for Individuals and Families, Child and Youth Development, Family Life Education, and Gerontology.
  • Students may apply early to the following master's degree programs and double count 9 credit hours of graduate courses toward both degrees: M.A.
  • degree in Human Development and Family Science and M.Ed. degree in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling.
  • The program is designed to prepare students to sit for applicable licensure or certification in Ohio.
  • Students planning to pursue licensure or certification in a state other than Ohio should review state educational requirements and contact information for state licensing boards.
