Program Outline

Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Western Australia

Degree Overview:

The Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Western Australia provides an education in the design, management, and resilience of natural and built landscapes. The program aims to improve the quality of the environment and enhance our experience of it. Students gain the knowledge and skills to respond to complex issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, urban ecology, and water-sensitive design. The program emphasizes systems thinking and creative practice to develop long-term, multi-scale solutions. Students have opportunities to engage in Work Integrated Learning and placements through Practicum units. Building on undergraduate studies in Landscape Architecture (or relevant conversion units), students acquire strong theoretical and practical knowledge and high-level technical, analytical, design, and communication skills. The course emphasizes ecological, cultural, and social design considerations at global, regional, and local levels.

Outline:

The Master of Landscape Architecture is offered in two modes:

  • Coursework: Students take core units (66 points) and choose either a series of option units covering a range of topics or a specialization in a related area of expertise (such as Environmental Planning or Urban Design).
  • Coursework and Dissertation: Students take core units (66 points), 12 points of option units, and pursue an independent research project of their choice (18 points).
  • For students in Course by Coursework only, without a Focus Area: Take all Core units (66 points) and 30 points of option units from Group A.
  • For students in Course by Coursework only, with a Focus Area: Take all Core units (66 points), required units from the selected Focus Area (24 points), and 6 points of Option units from Group A.
  • For students in Course by Coursework and Dissertation: Take all Core units (66 points), 12 points of Option units from Group A, and 18 points from Group B Dissertation.
