Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This one-year Top-up course is designed for students holding a HND in Mechanical Engineering who wish to enhance their technical and application skills. The program focuses on manufacturing and aims to equip students with industry-critical skills in teamwork, leadership, effective communication, and idea exchange with specialist professionals and a wider audience.

Objectives:

  • Extend technical and application skills in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Design and develop engineering systems for various fields.
  • Gain industry-critical skills in teamwork and leadership.
  • It equips them with methods and processes to recognize opportunities and plan for commercially viable benefits. Assessment: 100% coursework, two team assignments.
  • Portfolio engineering projects: This module develops professional skills and a portfolio for a career as a Design Engineer.
  • They learn to prototype and implement solutions using digital manufacturing technologies. Assessment: 100% coursework.
  • Manufacturing systems: This module introduces core concepts of manufacturing systems and computer integrated manufacturing in the product realization process.
  • Students develop understanding and ability to use CAD/CAM/CAE tools and processes in engineering design projects. It also covers quality issues, continuous improvement, inspection technologies, and methods. Assessment: 100% coursework, two elements.
  • Thermofluids and turbomachinery: This module explores heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics, focusing on internal combustion engines, fluid-mechanics governing equations, performance of pumps and turbines, and heat transfer applications.
  • Assessment: 2-hour examination (70%) and a workshop logbook and formal report assignment (30%).
  • Individual BEng project: This module requires students to plan, execute, review, and report on a major technical project related to their degree discipline.
  • It provides an opportunity to develop subject-specific expertise and explore new areas of interest. Assessment: Project Arrangement form, Project Progression Report, Interim report, Final project report, and Project oral presentation and demonstration.

Assessment:

  • Coursework: A significant portion of the assessment is based on coursework, including assignments, projects, reports, and logbooks.
  • Examinations: Some modules include a written examination component.
  • Oral Presentations: Students are assessed on their ability to present their work and ideas effectively.
  • Project Work: The Individual BEng project involves a comprehensive assessment of the project's planning, execution, review, and reporting.

Teaching:

  • Lectures: Lectures provide theoretical knowledge and foundational concepts.
  • Seminars: Seminars offer interactive discussions and deeper exploration of topics.
  • Practical Work: Practical sessions involve hands-on experience in labs and workshops, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world problems.
  • Project-based Learning: The program emphasizes project-based learning, allowing students to develop practical skills and experience.
  • Industry-relevant Content: The curriculum is designed to be relevant to industry needs, with input from industry advisors.

Careers:

  • Potential Career Paths: Mechanical engineers are employed in various sectors, including energy, transport, aviation, robotics, pharmaceuticals, motor, and marine industries.
