Program Overview

The BSc Top-up in Computer Systems Engineering provides students with the knowledge and skills to design and implement complex computer systems. It prepares students for careers in industries like automobile, aerospace, telecommunications, and network security. The program features modules such as Computer Architecture, Cybersecurity, and Embedded Systems. It also offers career support and extracurricular activities.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The BSc Top-up programme in Computer Systems Engineering is designed for students who have completed an HND or Foundation Degree in Computing, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or related fields. It also provides a pathway for BEng students who haven't been able to progress directly to BEng level 6 status. The program aims to provide students with the necessary learning outcomes to meet the educational requirements for Incorporated Engineers.

Objectives:

  • To provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in computer systems engineering.
  • To equip students with the ability to design, develop, and implement complex computer systems.
  • To prepare students for careers in various industries where computer systems engineering is essential.

Outline:

It also explores operating systems, their role in computing, and their applications in distributed and multimedia systems.

  • Assessment methods: 40% coursework, 60% exam.
  • It examines critical network security techniques, including firewalls, encryption, intrusion detection, and enterprise-wide security policies.
  • Assessment methods: 40% coursework, 60% exam.
  • It focuses on the design and development of database systems, modern computer architectures for servers, workstations, and embedded systems. It also provides students with a theoretical understanding and practical experience in software engineering, covering the entire software development lifecycle.
  • Assessment methods: 50% coursework, 50% exam.

Semester 2:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Signal Processing (EEE_6_ASP): This module focuses on signal processing in intelligent systems applications.
  • It covers the history and development of artificial intelligence systems, major techniques for problem description and knowledge representation, and signal processing concepts like sampling, quantization, and filter design.
  • Assessment methods: 40% coursework, 60% exam.
  • Embedded Systems and The Internet of Things (EEE_6_ESI): This module introduces embedded systems and the Internet of Things (IoT), covering techniques for embedded applications, parallel input and output, serial communication, interfacing, interrupt handling, and applications involving sensors and actuators.
  • It also discusses advanced challenges in embedded systems design and the principles of IoT connectivity.
  • Assessment methods: 40% coursework, 60% exam.
  • BSc Project: This individual project requires students to plan, execute, review, and report on a major piece of technical work related to their degree discipline.
  • It provides students with the opportunity to develop in-depth subject-specific expertise.

Assessment:

Modules are assessed through a combination of exams and coursework, with an overall balance of approximately 60% coursework and 40% written examinations.

Teaching:

  • The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical work in workshops and labs, and tutorials.
  • Lectures are recorded and all materials are distributed via the vle.lsbu.ac.uk portal.
  • Workshops are conducted in groups of no more than 30 students.
  • Teaching staff have extensive experience in teaching, research, and consultancy.

Careers:
