Degree Overview:

Saint Louis University's minor in health care ethics allows students to examine some of the ethical questions that arise in the complex health care system. SLU students will discuss the definition of death, how to allocate donated organs, what is considered a disease and when to withdraw life-sustaining treatment.


Outline:

  • Introductory Courses: Select one of the following:
  • HCE 2010 Foundations in Clinical Health Care Ethics (3 credits)
  • Elective Courses: Select 12 credits from courses with the "Health Care Ethics Minor" attribute which includes all HCE courses and the below:
  • HCE 1600 Embodiment, Life, and Death in Context or HCE 1700 Death, Disability, Disease, and the Meaning of Life
  • PHIL 2050 Ethics (strongly recommended) or PHIL 2055 Ethics, Justice, & the Person
  • PHIL 3360 Medical Ethics
  • THEO 2510 Christian Ethics
  • ENGL 3730 Introduction to Medical Humanities, Literature
  • ENGL 3740 Medicine and Literature
  • Total Credits: 15
  • Continuation Standards: A student must maintain a GPA in coursework for the minor in health care ethics of at least 2.00.

Other:

Only one 1000-level course may count for the minor.
