Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This Sixth-Year Degree in STEAM Education is designed for full-time working and licensed educators. It is the first STEAM program at this level in the State of Connecticut, filling a much-needed skills gap in the region. The program aims to hone educators' craft and provide them with skills in teaching the STEAM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) to K-12 students. Graduates will be positioned to move into teacher leader roles, command higher salaries in public school districts, and continue their education further with administrative certification and/or a doctoral degree.

Outline:

The innovative curriculum includes 30 credits covering a breadth of knowledge in teaching STEAM. Students will take a deep dive into standards, develop their inquiry and classroom practices, learn pedagogical techniques, and increase their knowledge in each of the STEAM disciplines. They will also tackle project-based learning and engineering design in hands-on projects.

Teaching:

Courses are offered in a flexible, blended format of both on-campus and online to help students maintain balance between work, life, and their education.

Careers:

Graduates will be prepared for career advancement and a pay increase in the public school system. They will also build knowledge for even further graduate study, such as administrative certification and/or a doctoral degree.

Other:

Candidates who have completed their 092 at SHU can complete a 15 credit CAS in STEAM Leadership.
