Program Overview


This program aims to develop designers and artists who push the boundaries of beauty and body identity. Through explorations of beauty technologies, body performance, visual culture, and speculative design, students engage in critical dialogue and contribute original insights to the industry. With access to industry-standard facilities and collaborations, graduates are prepared for careers in fashion, beauty, film, performance, and design futuring.

Program Outline

The program supports creative investigations, enabling students to enter critical dialogue and contribute original insights to the world of beauty ideals, the grotesque, gender politics, creature design, and the changing face of body identity.

  • Performing the Body: The body operates as a subject, situation, and material.
  • Students explore the performance of the body as a physical material, cultural space, and social interface.

Year Two

  • Researching Visual Culture: Researching visual forms and media as expressive of aspects of a culture, including anything that is seen, produced to be seen, and the way it is seen and understood.
  • Speculative Fictions and Design Futures: Investigates a range of color cosmetic, prosthetic, and hair tech application strategies, disruptive innovations, speculative projects, and science fiction imaginaries.

Teaching:

  • Specialist Facilities: Access to industry-standard make-up, hair, and prosthetics studios, The Beauty Room, The Body Lab, and The Prosthetics Studio.
  • Guest Lectures: Hear from high-profile industry speakers at guest lectures, including representatives from Illamasqua, MAC, National Theatre, and more.
  • Industry Collaborations and Work Placements: Encouraged to create industry collaborations and take up work placements throughout their studies, with opportunities to work with professional make-up teams at events such as London Fashion Week and Graduate Fashion Week.
