Program Overview
The European Studies minor provides a comprehensive understanding of European history, politics, and culture. Degree Overview:
The European Studies minor is a multidisciplinary program designed to provide undergraduate students with a broad understanding of European ideas and institutions over time. It covers European history, politics, and culture. The minor is designed to accommodate a wide range of student interests in particular time periods and specific countries.
Objectives:
- Gain a broad understanding of European ideas and institutions over time.
- Engage critically in the examination of Europe past and present through courses in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
- Develop an appreciation for the diverse cultural and historical experiences of Europe.
- Enhance skills in critical thinking, analysis, and research.
Assessment:
- The minor must include courses from at least three different disciplines (prefixes).
- All coursework used to satisfy the requirements of the minor must be completed with a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
Teaching:
- The program is taught by faculty from various departments within the College of Liberal & Creative Arts, including History, International Relations, Modern Languages and Literatures, and others.
- The minor is designed to be flexible and adaptable to students' individual interests, and can be tailored to focus on specific time periods, countries, or themes.
Careers:
- The European Studies minor is recommended for students considering careers in:
- Teaching
- The arts

- International business
- The foreign service
Other:
- The minor demonstrates interest in and knowledge of a region outside of the United States from a multidisciplinary perspective.
- Students completing the European Studies minor are strongly encouraged to participate in study-abroad programs.
- Courses taken in certified SF State Study-Abroad programs may be substituted for the minor requirements, at the discretion of the European Studies coordinator.
- All European Studies Minors are required to demonstrate intermediate-level competency in a European language other than English, relevant to their area of focus.
