The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies (COMM) program at San Francisco State University (SF State) is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of communication theory and practice in various contexts. The program aims to develop students' abilities to analyze, critique, and effectively communicate in diverse settings.
Program Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Articulate and apply appropriate theories to analyze communication in a methodologically consistent manner, considering paradigm and context.
- Articulate ethical standards and be committed to ethical communication practices in specific contexts.
- Apply course material to personal, social, and community life, demonstrating their communication skills in practical settings (e.g., public speeches, performances, or community-focused discourse).
- Read and critically evaluate original scholarship in the field of communication studies.
Other:
- Complementary Studies: Students must complete at least 12 units of Complementary Studies in a single subject area outside of the COMM major.
- SF State Studies: The program incorporates SF State Studies requirements, covering topics such as American Ethnic and Racial Minorities, Environmental Sustainability, Global Perspectives, and Social Justice.
- Transfer Students: The program is an approved pathway for students with an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Communication Studies, guaranteeing degree completion within 60 units after transfer.
- Roadmaps: The program provides first-time and transfer student roadmaps, outlining suggested course sequences for program completion.
- SF State Scholars Program: The SF State Scholars program allows students to simultaneously pursue a bachelor's and master's degree, enabling them to earn graduate credit during their junior and/or senior years.
