The program requires a minimum of 30 units and is structured as follows:
Core Requirements (15 units):
- BECA 700: Introduction to Graduate Study (3 units): This course must be taken in the first fall semester.
- BECA 701: Formula and Creativity in the Public Arts (3 units): This course must be completed within the first three semesters.
- BECA 702: Ethics and Responsibility in Electronic Media (3 units): This course must be completed within the first three semesters.
- BECA 706: Seminar in Media Aesthetics and Production Theory (3 units): This course must be completed within the first three semesters.
- BECA 822: Seminar in Media and Society (3 units): This course must be completed within the first three semesters.
Electives (9-12 units):
- Students can choose electives with approval from their graduate advisor.
- If students opt for the thesis culminating experience, BECA 897 will count towards elective units.
Culminating Experience (3-6 units):
- Students can choose one of two options: This option involves a written comprehensive examination created by a committee appointed by the instructor of BECA 896. Students can retake the exam once if they fail.
- Master's Thesis: Includes BECA 897 & 898 (Research for Thesis and Creative Project Proposals and Master's Thesis) for 6 units. This option requires the completion of a scholarly document reporting on original research, including research questions or hypotheses, research methods, and a scope appropriate for M.A. level work.
Assessment:
The BECA program assesses student learning through a combination of methods, including:
- Level One Written English Proficiency Assessment: A preadmission assessment can be demonstrated with a GRE Analytical Writing score of 4.5 or higher. Students who fail to meet this requirement may be admitted conditionally and required to take a department-administered writing test during their first semester. Failure to pass this test requires remedial writing courses before enrollment in 700-level or 800-level courses (excluding BECA 700 and 702).
- Level Two Written English Proficiency Assessment: Demonstrated by successfully completing the master's written comprehensive examination, master's thesis, or creative project.
- Culminating Experience: The chosen option (written comprehensive examination or master's thesis) serves as the final assessment of student learning.
