Program Overview

This Technical Certificate program prepares students for careers in Mechanical Drafting through instruction in orthographic projection, pictorial drawing, dimensioning, geometric construction, and mechanical drafting principles using CAD software and equipment. The program also develops students' communication fluency, mathematical concepts, critical thinking skills, and industry-specific knowledge and expertise.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This Technical Certificate program focuses on teaching students drafting concepts and the processes of orthographic projection, pictorial drawing, dimensioning, and geometric construction. Students learn these skills by hand and through CAD software and equipment. The program also provides a fundamental knowledge of mechanical drafting. The majority of a student's work is done on the computer. A project in the area of the student's interest will tie the course to real-world concepts.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply principles of grammar and vocabulary in the documentation required to perform the duties of a Mechanical Drafting technician and interviewing clients and communicating with constituents.
  • (Communication Fluency)
  • Apply mathematical concepts and practices that are required to properly perform calculation for design.
  • (Quantitative Fluency)
  • Interview clients, to help decide on materials, size and design, based on client's needs and students' knowledge of the industry.
  • (Critical Thinking)
  • Demonstrate mastery of terminology in the Mechanical drafting industry.
  • (Specialized Knowledge)
  • Demonstrate mastery of Specific Mechanical Design CAD software and generate substantially error-free designs.
  • (Specialized Knowledge)

Other:

  • CMU/WCCC technical certificate graduates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in specialized knowledge/applied learning, communication fluency, and critical thinking.
  • The Catalog Year determines which program sheet and certificate requirements a student must fulfill in order to graduate.
  • Visit with your advisor or academic department to determine which catalog year and program requirements you should follow.
