About Program

Program Overview

The program focuses on optimizing battery design, inverter integration, and control systems to improve efficiency. Students have the opportunity to become involved in the Formula Student team as Project Manager and receive a bursary of £19,237 per annum with additional project costs coverage.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The MPhil or PhD in Formula Student Electric Powertrain Design and Optimisation is a research degree program offered at Oxford Brookes University. The program focuses on advancing the electric powertrain of the Formula Student team's racing car. The project aims to improve the powertrain by exploring battery and pack design, optimizing the interaction between inverter technology, control, and high voltage (HV) architecture integration. The program aims to address the limitations of the current off-the-shelf motors and inverters by considering the interactions between subsystems to achieve greater efficiency. This involves exploring the full potential of the chosen hardware and controls within the specified envelope. The program also provides opportunities for students to become involved with the Formula Student team, assuming the role of Project Manager and working closely with the Team Leads.

Other:

The program is supported by a bursary of £19,237 per annum, with an additional £2,000 per annum available in years 1 and 3 to cover project costs. Tuition fees are paid by the University. The Formula Student Team has been successful in the competition for two decades, using ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) powertrains. For the past three years, they have transitioned to advanced electric powertrain solutions, using in-hub motors for a high-performance four-wheel drive racing car.

Tuition fees will be paid by the University. Bursary is £19,237 per annum. £2,000 per annum available in years 1 and 3 to cover project costs.
