Degree Overview:

The MPhil and PhD in Business and Management at Oxford Brookes University offers doctoral students the opportunity to explore a broad range of research topics within a wide disciplinary cluster, including:

Students will be supported in their pursuit of original research, combining empirical inquiry with theoretical contributions to knowledge. The program emphasizes responsible business and managerial practices that have a positive societal impact.

Assessment:

Progression on the full-time doctoral award is monitored through an annual process at the end of each academic year, as well as through two key progression points after approximately six months and eighteen months of study. Equivalent progression points are identified for part-time candidates. Formative assessment is ongoing through deadlines set with the supervisory team and feedback from OBBS research panels. Summative assessment takes place through the submission of an 80,000-100,000-word thesis and an oral examination (viva voce) with internal and external examiners appointed by the University.

Teaching:

The program provides a series of workshops, available on-campus, that support students in their studies. These workshops include:

• Newcomer and progression registration workshops
• University Research Ethics approach workshop
• Beginning and developing your evaluation of the literature
• Qualitative/Quantitative research approaches workshops A and B
• Completing your first draft and viva preparation sessions

• Our PhD alumni go on to work in a variety of different settings, including academic, government and related agencies, multinationals, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
• A doctoral award allows you to demonstrate that you have the highest level of critical analysis and thinking skills, which can be applied to a range of organizational settings.
• Many of our alumni have published from their doctoral studies, in practitioner as well as peer-reviewed journals.
• Many doctoral alumni contribute book chapters or complete books based on their research.

• The program offers a supervisory team of two to three researchers who can provide the best combination of expertise to support your work.
• Training courses in research methods are provided by the Business School and wider University.
• Regular seminars and learning activities are offered at the departmental, school, and university levels.
• Students have opportunities to present their work to different audiences, network with staff and fellow students, and engage with entrepreneurs in residence and visiting entrepreneurs.
• Collaborative opportunities, including receiving industrial funding and sponsorship, are available.
• Students can present at internal seminars and conferences and receive support in attending and presenting at external conferences (with some financial assistance available).
• Students may have the opportunity to work as Associate Lecturers and engage in teaching activity on modules offered by the Business School.
