Program Overview

The Instrumental Chemical Analysis Graduate Diploma is a unique eight-month course-based program, offered only by Trent University, that combines theoretical and practical training in analytical instrumentation. This program addresses the industry need for skilled professionals and equips graduates with the expertise required to excel in fields such as analytical chemistry, environmental science, pharmaceuticals, and forensic science.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Instrumental Chemical Analysis Graduate Diploma is an eight-month, course-based program designed for students with practical experience in operating analytical equipment in a laboratory setting. This program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of good laboratory practices, service and maintenance procedures, and the theoretical underpinnings of modern mass spectrometric and chromatographic instruments. The program was developed in response to a shortage of individuals with both theoretical and practical knowledge in chemical analysis. Trent University, home to the renowned Water Quality Centre, offers a wide range of analytical equipment, primarily mass spectrometers and associated sample preparation and introduction devices, making it an ideal location for this program.

Careers:

This program prepares graduates for careers in various fields, including:

  • Analytical chemistry: Working in laboratories to analyze samples for various purposes, such as quality control, environmental monitoring, or research.
  • Environmental science: Analyzing environmental samples to assess pollution levels and develop solutions for environmental problems.
  • Pharmaceutical industry: Analyzing drug samples to ensure quality and safety.
  • Food science: Analyzing food samples to ensure safety and quality.
  • Forensic science: Analyzing evidence from crime scenes to assist in investigations.

Other:

The program is offered as a full-time, course-based program with a September intake only. It is designed to be completed within eight months. The program is the only one of its kind in North America and is designed to meet the needs of employers by providing students with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of instrumental chemical analysis.
