This part-time, 50-week program prepares you for an internationally recognized Advanced Deckhand - Fishing endorsement certificate. Graduates will be equipped with the skills to work under supervision in coastal, offshore, and unlimited operational limits in the fishing industry. The program covers topics such as safety training, nautical terminology, vessel navigation, and seamanship.

Program Outline


Degree Overview:

This qualification is an approved training course leading to internationally recognised advanced deckhand fishing certificate, which opens the door to enhanced employment opportunities in New Zealand and offshore. Graduates of this course will be able to work under supervision in the coastal, offshore and unlimited operational limits as specified in the Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework. Upon successfully completing the requirements you'll receive the award of: New Zealand Certificate in Fishing Vessel Crewing (Level 3) This qualification is an approved training course leading to Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) for the Advanced Deckhand - Fishing endorsement (ADH-F) Certificate of Competency. You may also be eligible to be awarded: STCW Personal Survival (Level 3) STCW Basic Firefighting (Level 3) STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (Level 3) STCW Elementary First Aid (Level 3)

  • Good personal conduct and use of personal protection equipment to minimise hazards

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • Age: Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Qualifications:
  • Completed the New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 2), OR
  • Employed or seeking employment on an aquaculture or commercial fishing vessel.
  • English Language Requirements: Level 3 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
