Program Outline


Degree Overview:

This is a practical, environmental science course that includes field trips to some beautiful and remote parts of New Zealand. You'll also learn about the biology and ecology of living species and habitats. This course includes a focus on research design and environmental and ecological reporting. You’ll also choose elective papers in biosecurity or aquaculture. This course is designed as an entry to the Level 6 diploma, where you'll gain more advanced skills and knowledge.

The papers you'll study within this diploma include:

  • Conservation Biology and Sustainability
  • Risk Management
  • Botany
  • Terrestrial Invertebrates
  • Terrestrial Vertebrate Biology
  • Introduction to Terrestrial Science and Ecology
  • Introductory Biological Surveying
  • Plus choose one of the following:
  • Waste Management, or
  • Fisheries Management

Careers:

This course is designed as entry to the Level 6 diploma. By completing the Level 6 diploma, students gain employment in a number of exciting areas, including:

  • environmental education - national and international
  • roles within the Department of Conservation (DOC)
  • environmental consultancy work
  • environmental monitoring
  • resource consenting
  • iwi liaison
  • specialised research projects
  • environmental reporting

Other:

By the time you graduate you’ll have gained a variety of practical and risk management skills, and if you want to gain a degree, these diplomas are your ticket into the third year of either the Bachelor of Applied Science (Biodiversity Management) or a Bachelor of Science (Ecology and Biodiversity) with the University of Waikato. Exciting news – if, once you’ve finished this course you continue on to our NZ Dip Environmental Management Level 6, you’ll now have the option to study Tropical Ecology and Monitoring which includes a field trip to the Galapagos Island or Namibia!

Entry Requirements:

  • Domestic Applicants under 20:
  • Minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Suggested subjects include English, Mathematics, and Biology/Sciences.

  • Special admission may apply if Toi Ohomai staff are satisfied the applicant can successfully complete the requirements.
