The Science Summer School is a 4-week program designed for students interested in exploring fundamental scientific knowledge and skills. It covers principles and applications of science, practical laboratory techniques, and investigative skills essential for further scientific study.

The Science Summer School program is a 4-week course designed for students interested in gaining fundamental scientific knowledge and skills expected of a student entering a science degree. It covers the principles and applications of science, practical techniques for work in the laboratory, and investigative skills needed for further scientific study in higher education. The program consists of three subject modules for all students and one English module for international students (80 credits in total):

• (SCI455) Investigative Skills for Science, Level 4, 20 credits: This module focuses on developing investigative skills for scientific research.
It covers topics like:
• Fundamental concepts underpinning science and technology.
• Key concepts in chemistry, biology, and maths
• Scientific language and terminology
• Philosophy and methodology in natural science.
• Using graphs and charts to interpret scientific data.
• Good laboratory practice, including risk assessments & ethics.
• (SCI456) Practical Techniques in Science, Level 4, 20 credits: This module provides hands-on experience with laboratory techniques and equipment.
It covers topics like:
• Setting up and using a range of laboratory equipment.
• Instrumental techniques such as titrations, separations, microscopy, and colorimetry.
• (SCI457) Principles & Applications of Science, Level 4, 20 credits: This module explores the principles and applications of science in various fields.
It covers topics like:
• Understanding how science and technology influence and are influenced by contemporary society.
• (LAN474) English for STEM, Level 4, 20 credits: This module is specifically for international students and focuses on developing English language skills relevant to STEM subjects.

Teaching:

Wrexham University is committed to supporting students in maximizing their academic potential. They offer workshops and support sessions in areas such as academic writing, effective note-making, and preparing for assignments. Students can book appointments with academic skills tutors dedicated to helping with the practicalities of university work. The University’s Inclusion Services can provide appropriate guidance and support if any students require reasonable adjustments due to a recognized prevailing disability, medical condition, or specific learning difference.

Careers:

Upon completion of the Science Summer School, students have the opportunity to go onto one of Wrexham University's Bachelor’s degree programs in Applied Science such as Forensics or Biomedical Sciences.

Other:

• The course is open to students over the age of 18, regardless of background or country of residence.
• The Summer School doesn't require prior knowledge of the topics, making it ideal for exploring a new subject or personal interest.
• International students should be at B2 level (or equivalent) in English language.
• The course will run for 4 weeks from Monday 5th August 2024 – Friday 1st September 2024.
