Degree Overview:

The Human Resource Management (International Route) Level 6 Top-up degree is a one-academic year (September to June) full-time campus-based course designed for international students who have a Level 5 equivalent (e.g. HND or associate degree) in the field of Human Resource Management.


Objectives:

  • To help international students adjust to studying in the UK while earning a UK honors degree.
  • To develop the skills and knowledge necessary for postgraduate study in the UK and/or vocational skills for English-medium work in the field.
  • To develop academic and communication skills needed to perform at a postgraduate level in English.
  • To gain contemporary knowledge of HRM approaches and processes.
  • To develop personal and academic English language skills.
  • To gain confidence and experience functioning in English-medium academic and vocational environments.
  • To learn to conduct independent research projects and evaluate research in the field to prepare for postgraduate study in English.
  • To improve English skills with workshop-based interactive activities in small classes alongside other international and UK students.
  • To benefit from quality teaching by skilled academics who are experts in their field with real industry experience for content-based input.
  • To be guaranteed admission to postgraduate programs if achieving a 2:2 or above and be eligible for Chichester postgraduate program bursaries if achieving a 2:1 or above.

Structure:

  • 6 modules over 2 semesters.
  • 120 credits required to achieve a full UK degree (BA (Hons) Human Resource Management (International Route)).

Modules:

  • Academic English 1 (15 Credits, Semester 1): This module develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in academic contexts.
  • Academic English 2 (15 Credits, Semester 2): This module focuses on developing skills to write at length in academic settings in English and on selecting and critically evaluating appropriate texts in English to support your studies.
  • Strategic and International HRM (15 Credits, Semester 1): This module emphasizes how Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) intertwines with business strategy, organizational culture, and design, showcasing how it's implemented using various management tools and techniques.
  • It highlights the significance of HRM by highlighting current themes, developments, and issues, both nationally and internationally, and underscores the practical application and outcomes of these developments for organizations.

Assessment:

1,800-word report, 1.15-hour examination

  • Contemporary Issues in HRM (15 Credits, Semester 1): This module provides an opportunity to select, research, and critically assess a range of contemporary HR issues in depth.
  • These issues range from surveillance and emotional intelligence to aesthetics, discrimination in the workplace, the changing psychological contract, harassment and bullying at work, incivility in the workplace, 'healthy' organizations, and the intensification of work. Using contemporary case studies of international organizations, it explores the internal and external forces that determine the changing shape of all organizations.
  • Research Project (45 Credits, Semester 2): This module develops skills as an independent researcher, enabling you to plan, carry out, and evaluate your own small-scale research project in a topic related to human resource management.

Unique Approaches:

  • Small class sizes for language and research-based modules (no more than 20 students).
  • Subject-based modules delivered in class groups of around 25 students, including other international and UK-based students.
  • Additional (non-assessed) classes to aid integration into UK-based study and enhance language and academic skills.
  • Weekly class in academic & professional skills (2 hours: 2 semesters) to work alongside UK and other international undergraduate students.
  • Weekly classes to introduce to academic life at the University of Chichester (1.25 hours: 10 classes).
  • Weekly language & discussion groups (1.5 hours: 2 semesters) to explore and discuss topics of contemporary interest.
  • IELTS preparation classes (12 hours over 1 semester) for students needing to undertake IELTS examinations for postgraduate university entrance.

Careers:

  • Develop skills needed to succeed at postgraduate level.
  • Guaranteed entry to MSc in International Business programs with a 2nd class honours degree or higher (50%+).
  • Option to pursue a career in Human Resources by applying for the CIPD accredited MSc HRM and Organisational Psychology course.

Other:

  • The program is open only to those for whom English is not a first/main working language.
  • Applicants must satisfy both conditions A and B:
  • A: A Level 5 qualification in the field of human resource management.
  • B: IELTS 6.0 minimum (or recognized equivalent) in English language with no element lower than 5.5.
  • Applicants whose language does not yet meet requirement B are eligible for entry via successful completion of the University's Pre-sessional programmes.
  • The university has excellent learning facilities, including a library with over 200,000 books and 500,000 eBooks, a Learning Resource Centre with a café, IT/teaching rooms, and the Student Information Zone (SIZ).
