Program Overview
This 17-week Maritime Electro-Technology program prepares students with the skills and knowledge for a career as a maritime Electro-Technical Rating. Through compulsory courses and specialized electro-technology electives, students gain proficiency in shipboard operations and electrical maintenance. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to apply for the Electro-Technical Rating, enabling them to work in various maritime industries, including cruise ships, ferries, and oil and gas support vessels.

Degree Overview:
This programme provides the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in maritime electro-technology. It includes basic maritime knowledge, shipboard practice, and survival at sea. Upon completion, students are eligible to apply for the Electro-technical Rating. Graduates can work on a wide range of ships including cruise liners, ferries, container vessels, and support vessels in the oil and gas industry.
Outline:
The program is delivered full-time for 17 weeks. Students will complete 5 compulsory courses and courses from the Electro-technology strand.

- 942.213 STCW basic safety training – basic first aid (elementary first aid) (5 credits)
- 942.214 STCW Basic safety training – personal safety and social responsibility (3 credits)
- 942.215 Proficiency in security awareness (2 credits)
- 942.459 STCW basic safety training – basic fire fighting (fire fighting and fire prevention) (5 credits)
- Electro-technology Courses:
- 942.465 Shipboard maintenance and repair procedures – electrotech (7 credits)
- 942.466 Safe use of electrical equipment (5 credits)
- 942.467 Electrical maintenance and repair procedures (8 credits)
- 942.468 Monitoring and operation of shipboard electrical systems and machinery (10 credits)
- 942.469 Electrical and electronic measuring equipment, basic electrical fault finding (10 credits)
- Optional Course:
- 942.477 Marine dangerous goods (5 credits)
Careers:
Upon completion of the programme, combined with sea-time, students are eligible for careers as a rating on board commercial ships. They can also pursue further training to gain an electro-technical role on shore.
Other:
- Students will gain the required knowledge, skills and experience for eventual seagoing employment as a rating on board commercial ships.
- Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand licence.
- All persons wishing to qualify for a seafarer licence must also check the Maritime New Zealand prior certification and minimum service requirements for that licence.
- Graduates may also move to electro-technical jobs on-shore but may need to complete a New Zealand Certificate or Diploma in Electrical or Electronic Engineering to meet the registration requirements of the Electrical Workers Registration Board.
