Program Overview
This New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 4) prepares students for careers on commercial ships as ratings. The program includes compulsory courses in basic safety training, as well as courses in electro-technology, such as shipboard maintenance and repair procedures, safe use of electrical equipment, and electrical fault finding. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to apply for the electro-technical rating. The program typically takes 17 teaching weeks and starts in January.

Develop the skills to start your career in this vital global industry. Get basic maritime knowledge and skills and become familiar with shipping operations, shipboard practice and survival at sea. You will be prepared for a rewarding career in a global industry which has a continuous demand for well-trained and motivated people. You may find yourself working on a wide range of foreign-going ships from cruise liners, ferries and container vessels through to support vessels in the oil and gas industry. You will gain the required knowledge, skills and experience for eventual seagoing employment as a rating on board commercial ships.

- Compulsory Courses:
- 942.214 STCW Basic safety training – personal safety and social responsibility (3 credits): Apply safe and sustainable work practices, demonstrate effective communication and emergency response on board a vessel.
- 942.215 Proficiency in security awareness (2 credits): Providing knowledge, understanding and proficiency to personnel intending to work on ships who will not have any designated security duties.

- 942.459 STCW basic safety training – basic fire fighting (fire fighting and fire prevention) (5 credits): Apply safe work practices and contribute to effective communication and emergency response to fire on board a vessel.

- 942.465 Shipboard maintenance and repair procedures – electrotech (7 credits): Demonstrate knowledge and skills of basic routine shipboard maintenance and repair procedures on board.
- 942.466 Safe use of electrical equipment (5 credits): Demonstrate knowledge and skills of the safe use and operation of electrical equipment.
- 942.467 Electrical maintenance and repair procedures (8 credits): Demonstrate knowledge and skills of basic routine electrical maintenance and repair procedures of systems and machinery on board.
- 942.468 Monitoring and operation of shipboard electrical systems and machinery (10 credits): Demonstrate knowledge and skills to monitor electrical systems and machinery on board.
- 942.469 Electrical and electronic measuring equipment, basic electrical fault finding (10 credits): Demonstrate knowledge and skills of safety requirements for working on shipboard electrical systems.
Careers:
- Career Opportunities: Combined with sea-time, this certificate leads to careers as a rating on board commercial ships. Completion of this certificate leads to entry into one of the three Level 6 Diploma programmes (nautical science, marine engineering and marine electro-technology).
