The New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Crewing (Level 3), also known as Qualified Deck Crew, is a 40-credit program designed to prepare students for a career as safe and effective deck crew on vessels under 24 meters in length operating in restricted and near coastal waters of New Zealand. The program is ideal for individuals who are newly employed in the maritime industry and have access to a vessel. It is also suitable for employers who want to supplement new employee induction training. The program emphasizes emergency procedures, including basic extinguisher training, sea survival skills, and the completion of the marine radio license. Students can train for their ticket while being employed, gaining practical experience on the water. The program includes the completion of an MNZ approved Training Record Book (TRB) and prepares students for the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ): Qualified Deck Crew certificate of proficiency.
Outline:
The program consists of three core courses totaling 40 credits:
- 943.342 Operational seamanship (15 credits): This course provides students with the seamanship knowledge and skills to support the safe operation of a vessel.
- 943.343 Health and safety support to vessel personnel (10 credits): This course equips students with the knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to the health and safety of all persons on board a vessel.
- 943.344 Safety support during vessel emergencies (15 credits): This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to contribute to safety during vessel emergency situations. In addition to the core courses, students are required to complete two ancillary courses: Students who have previously completed these courses, either with MIT or another provider, may be eligible for credit transfer or cross-credit.
Careers:
Graduates of this program will possess the skills and knowledge required to work as deck crew on commercial or passenger vessels operating in restricted or coastal waters. They can also progress to higher level certificates and work on larger vessels.
Other:
Students may be required to complete literacy and numeracy assessments as part of the program. The MNZ Qualified Deck Crew certificate of proficiency requires, in addition to the program, sea service, an MNZ medical fitness certificate, an eyesight test (including for color vision), a fit and proper person check, a final exam, and ancillary certificates.
