This advanced qualification can fast-track your way to a management job and better career options. Fast-track your way to a logistics management job in the supply chain and shipping industry. If you already have work experience or a base qualification in the industry, this advanced logistics management qualification is your stepping stone to better career options. You will build on your existing skills and knowledge in logistics and commercial shipping and learn business analysis and management concepts such as sustainability, resilience, and risk planning, as well as related issues of law. Apply your skills in industry case studies. When you graduate you will be ready for management roles in the areas of supply chain, logistics, freight transport, sustainability, and crises management. There may be some onsite block attendance required.

You will need to complete the below eight courses (120 credits):

  • Level 6
  • 944.626 Transport marketing (15 credits)
  • This paper has a standard marketing approach but incorporates business communications and presentations. The focus is on the marketing requirements of logistics and transport companies in a global setting.
  • 944.640 Network systems (10 credits) Use strategic management tools to manage supply chain variables, including:
  • Complexity of supply chain networks and Global dimensions of supply chains
  • Global trade and commerce and contributing factors for supply chain flows
  • Global markets and strategy
  • Materials management versus physical distribution
  • Nodes versus links
  • Logistics channels
  • The supply chain network design process and alternatives
  • Facility location analysis and customer fulfilment models.
  • Level 7
  • 944.708 Logistics practice (15 credits)
  • The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills that are required in the practice of logistics and supply chain management. To achieve this the course will examine and integrate the following topics by means of an extensive and detailed project.
  • Study the physical movement and storage of goods, including the effect of geography on the business of logistics in terms of product care, storage and warehousing, modal characteristics, and the advantages and disadvantages of each
  • Understand the commercial system that supports international trade – INCO terms, methods of payment; contracts of sale, contracts of carriage; commercial, transport and statutory documentation; supply chain costing.
  • ICT in the supply chain.
  • 944.709 Transport and shipping law (15 credits) Gain an overview of the law and types of liability, including:
  • The strict liability rules in civil law and common law systems
  • Carrier liability in civil and common law systems (bailment, contract, statute and tort).
  • This will include developing your knowledge and understanding of the legal regimes and claims processes that encompasses the movement and storage of goods by an individual or combination of modes - Interpretation and application of the laws, codes, and conventions that deal with carriage of goods by land, sea and air.
  • 944.710 Logistics management (15 credits) Study commonly used systems of inventory management and transport networks.
  • The supply chain parts and processes are also broken down and examined and the big picture of supply chain management factors and analysis is explored.
  • 944.711 Industry research (15 credits) Propose your research plan and action any approved industry topic to explore the global logistics environment or local issues.
  • Learn how to propose research topics and write without plagiarising by using a relevant business topic to reinforce your academic writing.
  • 944.712 Trade management in shipping (15 credits) Experience the process of planning and constructing a new business expansion, contextualised within the perspective of the shipping line trade management.
  • This involves establishing commodity movements, seasonal trade statistics from NZ, operational cost calculation, setting revenue and modelling variables.
  • Level 8
  • 944.800 Managing risk and resilience (20 credits)
  • The purpose of this course is to provide you with the required skills and knowledge to actively engage in managing risk, creating resilience and solving dilemma within the logistics and transport field, where the optimal course of action is contingent upon the internal and external situation.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • For Graduate Diplomas entry is open to degree graduates.
  • However, subject to the regulations of the award, those who have been able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or educational experience of an appropriate kind may be granted admission.
  • Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
  • Successful completion of an appropriate NQF level 6 or 7 programme, e.g.
  • a business related degree, or
  • Former students who have gained a Level 7 Graduate Certificate in Supply Chain or a Level 7 Graduate Certificate in Shipping may be granted entry to the Graduate Diploma Programme.
  • Former students who have gained a Level 6 Graduate Certificate in Supply Chain or a Level 6 Graduate Certificate in Shipping may also be granted entry to the Graduate Diploma programme, provided they are also able to demonstrate appropriate work experience, or
  • Successful completion of New Zealand Diploma in Supply Chain Management; plus relevant work experience, or
  • Successful completion of New Zealand Diploma in International Freight Logistics; plus relevant work experience*, or
  • Evidence of at least 3 years relevant work experience at a senior operational level or equivalent (prospective students may be asked to complete a research essay to show academic ability).
  • Students must be able to show a positive attitude to learning and achievement, a high standard of personal discipline and effective communication skills.
  • These will be normally assessed by way of an interview. Alternative means to assess these criteria will be adopted where an interview is not practicable, as in the case of international students.
  • * Evidence of at least 3 years relevant work experience at a senior operational level or equivalent (prospective students may be asked to complete a research essay to show academic ability).
  • Selection Criteria
  • Prospective students who meet the entry criteria and interview requirements will be accepted on a first come first served basis until the course is full.
  • Preference may be given to graduates from the Manukau Institute of Technology Graduate Certificate in Supply Chain Management or the Manukau Institute of Technology Graduate Certificate in Shipping.
  • Special & discretionary admission
  • Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme is eligible for Special Admission.
  • Te Pūkenga works with the ākonga to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. Any ākonga who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission.
