Program Overview
Students can choose between a thesis option, which requires a research project and oral exam, or a non-thesis option, which includes a special project and oral exam. The program prepares graduates for careers in the petroleum industry.
Program Outline
Students with a BS degree in other engineering fields or science will be required to complete additional coursework (with no graduate credit) based on their previous academic training. Students have the option to pursue either a thesis or a non-thesis degree. The thesis option requires a research project and a comprehensive oral exam, while the non-thesis option requires a special project and a comprehensive oral exam.
Outline:
Thesis Option:
- Coursework: A minimum of 24 graduate credit hours, with at least 12 hours at the 7000 level or above, excluding thesis research credit.
- Thesis Research: 6 credit hours.
- Core Curriculum Requirements: A minimum of 18 credit hours in drilling, production, formation evaluation, reservoir engineering, and engineering mathematics (see Core Curriculum Requirements document).
- Secondary Concentration Area: A minimum of 6 credit hours in a specified field of study, as determined by the advisory committee. The proposal should include:
- Problem definition and motivations.
- Summary of previous work in the area.
- Approach and tools to be used. The exam must be completed within two years after admission to the MS program, and no later than three years after admission. The exam includes:
- Comprehensive review of relevant literature.
- Comparison, benchmarking, and validation of results.
- Demonstration of mastery of the tools used.
- Core Curriculum Requirements: A minimum of 18 credit hours in drilling, production, formation evaluation, reservoir engineering, and engineering mathematics (see Core Curriculum Requirements document).
- Secondary Concentration Area: A minimum of 6 credit hours in a specified field of study, as determined by the advisory committee. The exam may be based upon one of the following options:
- Presentation of an independent project related to a specific subject area.
- Presentation of a project beyond coursework using knowledge from courses, internships, or personal experience.
- An oral exam covering challenging technical questions in the four major areas of petroleum engineering.
Assessment:
- Thesis Option: The thesis must be approved by the advisory committee and the student must pass a comprehensive final oral exam.
